Gardaí are reminding people that the Ballinasloe Fair & Festival is not going ahead this weekend.

Additional Gardaí are being deployed to Ballinasloe this weekend out of concerns that crowds will gather anyway, for unofficial festivities.

Gatherings were reported in the area last weekend for ad-hoc gatherings that were not part of the official fair.

The Fair’s coordinating group announced back in July that it was being cancelled for the second year in a row for health and safety reasons.

It said that after consultation with the HSE “the Coordination Committee were advised that it is unlikely that assurances could be given that we could have a return to normality with the removal of all COVID restrictions for public and outdoor gatherings by October 2021.”

“The Coordinating Committee would like to thank the local community, sponsors, and all associations involved for their ongoing commitment and support.”

“We look forward to welcoming all participants and visitors to Ballinasloe Fair and Festival in 2022.”

The 2022 Ballinasloe Horse Fair and Festival will mark the 300th anniversary of the historic and world renowned event.
