Galway Daily news Ballinasloe Horse Fair cancelled again this year

Gardaí and the organisers of the Ballinasloe Horse Fair and Festival are once again reminding the public that it will not be taking place this weekend.

The fresh reminder that people should not travel to Ballinasloe comes after a number of people did show up last week, for what would have been the first weekend of the fair.

The annual Ballinasloe Horse Fair was due to run from October 3 to October 11, but the decision was made by the Organising Committee back in June not to go ahead with this year’s festivities for public health reasons.

Inspector Declan Rock of the Ballinasloe Garda District said “The Ballinasloe Country Fair has always been an event the public and the local community celebrate every year and we understand it is disappointing that due to the current pandemic it will not go ahead this weekend.”

“Unfortunately Covid-19 is still with us, and we all need to continue our hard work to keep our communities safe,” the Inspector added.

Despite advance notice not to show up, there were people who travelled to Ballinasloe last weekend “expecting it would be taking place as normal” Inspector Rock said.

“Therefore we wish to re-emphasise that there will be no events taking place this weekend, which, under normal circumstances would mark the final weekend of the fair.”
