Two men were arrested in Salthill yesterday evening following an altercation, where gardaí had to disperse a crowd of young people trying to prevent the arrest.
Shortly before 7pm on Saturday gardaí on patrol saw two men fighting on Salthill Promenade.
When gardaí approached, one of the men became aggressive and resisted arrest a garda spokesperson said.
A crowd of approximately 40 young people tried to obstruct the arrests, and more officers had to be called to restore calm and disperse the crowd.
Gardaí maintained a heightened presence in the area with increased patrols yesterday evening after the incident.
The two people arrested were taken to Salthill Garda Station, and have since been released.
A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
