Gardaí in Galway suffered the third highest number of injuries in the line of duty last year.

Figures released to the Irish Times show that Gardaí in the Galway Division suffered 15 injuries as a result of an assault in 2020.

This number was exceeded only by the Laois/Offaly (16) and Waterford (24) divisions.

In total there were 199 injuries suffered by Gardaí on duty last year according to the Irish Times’ reporting.

Of these, 91 were ‘bruising/grazes/or bites’, 38 were ‘sprains or strains’, in 15 incidents officers suffered ‘open wounds”, and 10 officers suffered a ‘closed fracture’.

Gardaí reported the fewest injuries in the Clare, Kildare, and Louth divisions, with just three incidents recorded in each area.

As of December 31, 2020 there were 623 Gardaí stationed in the Galway Division.

These included 504 Garda officers, 89 Sergeants, 23 Inspectors, 6 Superintendents, and 1 Chief Superintendent.
