There are just four people being treated for COVID-19 in hospital in Galway today according to the latest HSE figures.

As of 8pm on Thursday there were four confirmed cases at University Hospital Galway, and Portiuncula Hospital in entirely free of COVID patients.

Just one of the confirmed cases at University Hospital Galway is currently receiving treatment in Intensive Care.

There are a two further suspected cases in Galway hospitals, one each at UHG and Portiuncula.

Nationwide, there are 272 confirmed and 102 suspected cases in Irish hospitals as of Thursday night.

Of these, 38 confirmed patients and 8 suspected are in Intensive Care and a total of 24 patients are on ventilators.

There were 27 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Galway yesterday, the highest number seen in more than a week.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, struck an optimistic note that “The country as a whole can succeed in suppressing this disease to low levels in the coming weeks.”

“We have achieved a great deal of suppression over the Level 5 period, the coming weeks offer us an opportunity to drive transmission down further.”
