Five COVID patients at UHG in the ICU

There are five COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit at University Hospital Galway, the highest number in the country.

There are a total of 15 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Galway hospitals in the latest HSE figures, ten at UHG and five at Portiuncula.

None of the patients at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe were in the ICU according to this data.

But aside from COVID patients, Galway’s hospitals have been extremely busy this week, with very high numbers attending the emergency department.

There were 14 patients waiting for a bed at Portiuncula this morning according to INMO Trolley/Ward Watch figures, down from an extreme high of 27.

UHG is also the third most overcrowded hospital in Ireland today, with 37 patients waiting for a bed, the same numbers as yesterday’s count.

Nationwide there were 147 confirmed cases in Irish hospital as of Wednesday night, with 26 of those in the ICU.
