The number of patients hospitalised with COVID-19 in Galway has increased to 16 in the latest figures from the HSE.

On Wednesday night there were 15 confirmed cases at University Hospital Galway, up from 12 at the start of the week.

But at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, the number of COVID-19 patients dropped from two, down on one as of yesterday.

Back at UHG, the number of patients who have been admitted to the intensive care unit increased to three, from a low of just one case in the ICU.

Nationwide there were 335 confirmed cases in Irish hospitals as of 8pm on Wednesday, of whom 70 are in the ICU.

A further 984 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Ireland yesterday, the second time this week where there have been fewer than 1k daily cases.
