There were just 34 people in Galway hospitalised with COVID-19 in the latest figures from the Health Service Executive.

There were 28 people confirmed cases at University Hospital Galway as of 8pm on Tuesday, and a further 6 cases at Portiuncula Hospital.

Of the patients at UHG, there was a slight increase in the number of serious cases admitted to the ICU, up to 11 patients.

However, Portiuncula Hospital has seen the number of ICU admittances fall to just one person, a welcome decline after the Ballinasloe hospital reached 4 cases admitted to Intensive Care last month.

There are a further three suspected COVID-19 cases at UHG for which test results are awaited, and one at Portiuncula. One of the suspected cases in Ballinasloe is in the ICU.

Nationwide there 1,012 confirmed cases in Irish acute hospitals as of Tuesday evening, of whom 175 were in the ICU.

There were 54 people admitted to hospital with COVID-19 in 24 hours prior to this.
