N59 Clifden road reopens after serious two car collision

The N59 Clifden road outside Leenane has reopened this afternoon after a road traffic collision yesterday which hospitalised eight people.

The road was closed overnight to await enough light for gardaí to conduct a technical examination of the scene after the collision, but has since reopened to traffic.

The two car collision took place approximately 2km outside of Leenane on the Letterfrack side on shortly after 5pm on Thursday evening.

Eight people were taken from the scene to University Hospital Galway, but its understood that their injuries were not life threatening.

One male, however, received serious injuries according to Gardai.

Gardaí issued an appeal for witnesses, in particular anyone who travelled on this stretch of road between 4:45pm and 6pm.
