City council closing Salthill car parks due to Storm Ellen

Galway City Council is closing car parks in Salthill due to the possibility of flooding from Storm Ellen, which will hit Ireland tonight.

A Status Orange Weather Warning has been issued for Galway, Mayo, and all of Munster as Storm Ellen approaches on Wednesday.

Storm Ellen will track over Ireland on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, with “severe and damaging winds” forecast.

There will be some flooding as a result of heavy rainfall and storm surge Met Eireann has said.

The Status Orange weather warning will be in force from 9pm tonight until 6am on Thursday morning.

A Status Yellow wind warning has also been issued for all of Ireland, with “severe gusts” expected tonight and throughout Thursday.

This will come into force at the same time as the orange alert, but will remain in force until midnight on Thursday.

“Galway City Council is advising caution out and about in coastal areas on Wednesday night and during Thursday due to the forecast of ‘severe and potentially damaging winds.'”

“Carparks in Salthill will be closed due to potential coastal flooding,” the council said on Facebook.
