Galway Daily news Councillor warns of kids buying illegal fireworks in the run up to Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner and while everyone loves a fireworks display, city councillor Alan Cheevers says that we have to be mindful of children’s safety at the same time.

Coming up on Halloween councillor Cheevers says that parents and community groups need to be extra vigilant of young people in their care with fireworks and crackers.

“I believe that many of these fireworks are being brought in  from the UK and others locations,” the Fianna Fáil councillor said.

He added that many of these are “of high intensity and highly dangerous” and called on those adults responsible to report it to gardaí if they see them being used in public spaces in a way that endangers public safety.

Education on safety is a key part of reaching young people on this issue he said, suggesting that this could be tackled in schools and sports clubs.

He also said that gardaí need to have a programme in place before Halloween to deal with this and apprehend those selling illegal fireworks.

“It is important that children enjoy Halloween in a safe environment,” Alan Cheevers concluded.
