Galway city is one of ten local authorities around Ireland which will be helping to facilitate events to mark Africa Day this year.
Africa Day, which falls on May 25 each year, marks the day of the foundation of the African Union which was established in 1963 by 32 countries in Africa to help bring unity and economic prosperity.
Irish Aid, the government’s programme for overseas development, provides financial and practical supports for organisations hosting events to mark the day.
Events are being either held or facilitated by Galway city council, Cork City Council, Fingal County Council, Kildare County Council, Laois County Council, Limerick City and County Councils, Meath County Council, South Dublin County Council, Waterford City and County Councils, and Wexford County Council.
Minister of State for International Development and Galway TD Ciarán Cannon welcomed the news that local authorities have “responded so positively to our invitation to engage in helping communities to celebrate Africa Day 2019 by leading their own events and celebrations.”
“While this year we are taking a different approach to marking Africa Day, I am confident that communities will continue to enjoy multiple wonderful opportunities to learn more about how Ireland engages the countries and people of Africa in so many positive ways.”
Details of the events are still being finalised, but Cannon is adamant that there will be something for everyone to enjoy “Whether your interest is in cultural activities, African film and music, or African cuisine”.
