A local TD has called on the government to be clear on its plans in relation to the announcement on carbon emission targets.

Galway East TD Seán Canney said that the 25% target for farming will not be possible to achieve without a detailed costed plan.

He said that it is merely a PR stunt without any back up details and that there is talk of innovation and new technologies – but these are just a figment of someone’s imagination.

“The passing of the Climate Action Bill set in train this crazy attack on farming,” said the Independent TD.

“The Bill was supported by Fianna Fail and Fine Gael backbench TDs, so they cannot blame the Greens. It is notable that vague promises of income support have no detail and no money in place.”

Canney said that young farmers will find it difficult to stay farming and food projection will be affected.

“In a country of growing population, secure food supply is essential. This knee-jerk reaction by Government will pose serious problems for the family farms around the country.”
