Bus Eireann and the NTA should reconsider and reverse the recent decision to cancel the expressway bus service between Galway and Dublin.

The Independent TD said that Bus Eireann’s recent decision to cancel the 20 and X20 routes between Galway and Dublin is a contradiction of government policy reduce car use through improved public transport.

Along with connecting Galway City with Dublin and the airport, the expressway also serves Craughwell, Loughrea, Aughrim, and Ballinasloe.

The route has been cancelled with effect from Wednesday, July 28, along with three other routes from Dublin to Belfast, Cork, and Limerick.

“This decision is a further insult to rural people and denies them access to public transport,” Seán Canney said.

“We need answers and I have written to the NTA and Bus Eireann seeking an immediate reversal of the shocking decision”.

Bus Eireann said that the decision to cancel these four routes was made to safeguard the remaining 14 in light of severe losses in the past year.

Sean Canney added that these public transport routes are being cancelled at a time when the government is introducing a carbon tax.
