ABBEYKNOCKMOY HANDBALL CLUB

National titles for “Galway Girls”.

A great win on Sunday 15th of April for local Abbeyknockmoy girl, Emma Kinane. She was crowned National 40×20 Champion (@U13 & under) in a tense, hard fought final in Kingscourt, Co. Cavan. Emma is a member of the Abbeyknockmoy Handball Club and is no stranger to winning titles. Her previous title successes include County and Provincial Championships at U11, U12, U13 and Under 14.

Earlier this year she was narrowly beaten in the All-Ireland Semi-Final @ U14. She still qualifies for this competition next year .She has also been victorious in the Liam Bourke Memorial held in Mayo and at the Queen of the Gym in Limerick.

Emma’s club is going from strength to strength and has many fine players at most levels. There has been a great history of handball in Abbeyknockmoy for many years, dating back to the 1930’s in the ‘old alley’ on the outskirts of the village.

This alley is still in existence, and recently restored, but thankfully the tradition is continued in more comfortable surroundings at the nearby Hurling Club. The centre boasts excellent facilities for all ages in the sport.

But success was twofold for Galway in Cavan in April, with victory for Niamh Heffernan, of Claregalway (@U17) . Niamh will now be part of Team Ireland in the upcoming World Championships. Emma is also traveling to these competitions representing her club.

Emma is hoping to follow in Niamh’s footsteps as she won the U13 title 3 years ago, history repeating itself we hope.

Well done to the two Galway girls and to the rest of the Galway participants in Cavan on the 15th April. Handball is going from strength to strength in the county.

This past weekend in Breaffy House Sports arena , Emma Kinane added another title to her list , the 13&U National Wallball Championship.

At the same venue a club-mate of hers , Mikey Kelly , won the boys 15&Under Championship to add to his 2018 All-Ireland U14 40×20 title. Mikey will be joining Emma in Minnesota this Summer and is hoping to win an U15 medals to add to his 2015 U11 Gold Medals.

KILKERRIN UNITED

Kilkerrin United will face Hodson Bay Athletic in the RDFL First Division Cup Final on Saturday next at 7pm in Lecarrow. Kilkerrin had to battle all the way in Sunday’s semi-final away to CP Ajax.

The home side took an early lead but Declan Murphy equalised from the penalty spot following a foul on Aidan Kitt and the same player struck again before the break to send Kilkerrin in 2-1 ahead at the interval. When a Damian Mahon shot came back off the crossbar midway through the second half, Declan Murphy completed his hat-trick.

CP Ajax pulled a goal back with ten minutes remaining but Kilkerrin held on for a narrow victory.

U11 boys travelled to St. John’s Athletic on Friday for an enjoyable game. Sam Nolan, Tiernan Kilmartin & Rian Hardagon were all on target as both sides played some good attacking football. Well done to all involved.

U16 boys lost 1-0 to Dysart FC.

Last week’s RDFL Lotto numbers were 4, 8, 12 & 17. There was no jackpot winner. Eleven match 3 winners included Fr Tom Cummins, Finola Kennedy & Charlie Stephens, all c/o Kilkerrin United. The next draw is on May 22nd for a jackpot of €13,350. Huge thanks to everybody who has purchased an annual €50 lotto ticket to date.
