A weather warning for heavy rainfall and possible local flooding overnight in Galway is now in force.

Met Eireann has issued a status yellow rainfall warning for all of Connacht, as well as counties Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Longford, Louth, Westmeath and Meath.

The weather warning is in force from 6pm on Wednesday evening until 6am on Thursday morning.

Galway has already been experiencing a damp and blustery day, with persistent light rain throughout the day.

The worst showers in Galway are forecast for between 10pm tonight and 1am-2am on Thursday.

Temperatures tonight will average 10 to 11 degrees celcius, a considerable improvement on the recent cold snap, with moderate southerly winds.
