Met Eireann has extended a Status Orange Snow and Ice Warning to Galway from tonight, with significant snowfall expected to create dangerous conditions.

The Status Orange weather warning for Galway, Clare, Limerick, and Tipperary will come into effect at midnight tonight and remain in place until 12pm Thursday.

Met Eireann has said that significant accumulations of snowfall is expected during this time.

The risks created very difficult travelling conditions with poor visibility, which will be exacerbated by widespread frost and ice.

Disruptions and delays to public transport are also expected on Thursday morning due to this likely snowfall.

A warning for animal welfare issues arising from the weather has also been issued.

Before that Status Orange warning comes into effect there is already a Status Yellow weather warning for Snow and Ice in place for Galway today, which will also remain until midday Thursday.

In addition, Met Eireann has issued a Low Temperature/Ice warning for all of Ireland tonight.

From 8pm onwards temperatures are expected to plummet, with widespread rost and icy stretches creating hazardous conditions.

In Galway temperatures are expected to hit lows of -3 degrees overnight, the coldest we’ve seen so far this year.
