Upgrade works planned for Athenry sports grounds

Plans have been submitted to Galway County Council for significant upgrade works to the sports grounds at Moanbaun, Athenry to improve accessibility and add multiple new athletics facilities.

The Moanbaun Sports Development Committee is seeking planning permission for renovations to the sports grounds used by the Athenry Soccer and Athletics Clubs.

The proposed upgrades will involve installing new accessible concrete ramps and steps linking the upper and lower pitches.

A new pedestrian access will be installed to the front wall, along with new internal pathways, and security fencing around the approved sports field area.

Approval is also being sought to redesign a previously approved sports field area with an 8 lane athletics track and playing pitch, which was given the go ahead in February 2018.

It is now intended to add a new long jump, high jump, and shot put area to the sports field design.

Galway County Council is due to make a decision on whether to grant planning permission for the development by November 4 of this year.
