GALWAY GAA: GALWAY’S GREATEST FOOTBALLER – THE QUARTER-FINALS!

The first round of twitter voting concluded in the early hours of Tuesday morning (22nd May) in our competition to select ‘Galway’s Greatest Footballer’ as the 108 entrants were whittled down to 56 players.

Seven players got more than 80% in their respective first round ties with 1998-star Jarlath Fallon topping the poll at 92%.  Two-time winning captain Enda Colleran was next on 91% followed by Derek Savage (89%) and ‘The Master’ Sean Purcell at 88%.

Michael Donnellan scored 87%, Padraic Joyce got 82% and Sean Og De Paor finished with 81%.

The top two players from each of the 27 first round polls qualified for the quarter-finals along with the best two third placed finishers.  The quarter-finals, which start this morning (Tuesday) will see another 14 groups with four each.  Only the winners advance along with the best two runners-up.

As mentioned before the competition started, any ties would be settled by the adjudication committee and they were called upon to make four decisions.

In Match 8, there were two players level in second place and they sided with Liam O’Neill over Jack Kissane.

In Match 9, there were two players level in second place and they sided with Hugo Carey over Declan Kyne.

In Match 19, there were two players level in second place and they sided with Dinny Sullivan over Jimmy McGauran.

And in Match 27, there were two players level in second place and they sided with Willie Joyce over Dermot Mitchell.

There was no need to make a decision in Match 21 between Johnny Heaney and Gay McManus as both scored 27% which was enough to carry three qualifiers into the quarter-finals.  Two third placed players were guaranteed advancing and Martin Newell took the other place also scoring 27%.

Some big names to depart after the first round included Barry Brennan, Ian Burke, Declan Kyne, Liam Sammon, Sean Keeley, Finian Hanley, Tommy Joyce and Alan Keane.

The quarter-final pairings will appear below shortly after the Round One results and the polls will stay open for 18 hours.  The semi-finals take place on Wednesday.
