GALWAY CAMOGIE: GALWAY’S GREATEST CAMOGIE PLAYER – THE QUARTER-FINALS!

The first round of twitter voting concluded in the early hours of Tuesday morning (29th May) in our competition to select ‘Galway’s Greatest Camogie Player’ as the 104 entrants were whittled down to 56 players.

Four players got more than 60% in their respective first round ties with 2013 All-Ireland winner Therese Maher topping the poll with 81%.  Three-time All-Star Niamh McGrath was next on 77% followed by current captain Sarah Dervan (64%) and Rebecca Hennelly (61%).

The top two players from each of the 26 first round polls qualified for the quarter-finals along with the best four third placed finishers.  The quarter-finals, which start this morning (Tuesday), will see another 14 groups with four each.  Only the winners advance along with the best two runners-up.

As mentioned before the competition started, any ties would be settled by the adjudication committee but they weren’t called upon to make any decisions.

The best four third placed finishers who advanced to the quarter-finals were Anne Broderick (26%), Carmel Hannon (26%0, Ann Marie Starr (23%) and Clodagh McGrath (21%).

Some big names to depart after the first round included 2013 winning captain Lorraine Ryan, 2013 winning goal scorer Ailish O’Reilly, Aine Hillary, Kathleen Quinn, Sinead Keane and Midge Poniard.

The quarter-final pairings will appear below shortly after the Round One results and the polls will stay open for 15 hours.  The semi-finals take place on Wednesday.
