Galway Daily news Water outages expected in Loughrea tomorrow

Traffic disruption is expected on the Tuam Road in Athenry over the coming weeks as work is underway replacing water mains.

Uisce Eireann is replacing roughly half a kilometre of old water mains which were prone to frequent burst and leaks along the Tuam Road.

On top of costing much water, this also led to frequent outages and supply disruptions for customers.

“Working in partnership with Galway County Council, we have prioritised leakage reduction works to those areas which need it most,” said Gerry O’Donnell with Uisce Eireann.

“This project will see the replacement of approximately 460m of old water mains. Replacing these pipes will address water pressure, supply and leakage issues which affect some homes and businesses in the Athenry area.”

He added that, “Part of ensuring that safe and reliable drinking water is produced every day in County Galway, is driving down the amount of clean, treated water lost to leakage.”

“We would like to thank customers for their continued cooperation and patience while we continue to upgrade and improve the water supply across the county.”

The pipe laying works are being carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Eireann, and the project is expected to be completed by the end of May.

Traffic management will be in place to facilitate the works however local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.

The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.

If the existing service connections on the public side are lead these will be replaced as part of these improvement works.

Uisce Eireann is also carrying out works this summer to upgrade the Inverin water mains network with new replacement pipes.

New teen drama series set in Connemara 'Saol Ella' hitting the screens

A new limited series from TG4, Saol Ella tells the story of teenage girl Ella growing up in the Connemara Gaeltacht, when her life is turned upside down by new arrivals.

Bursting with excitement to be getting out of school, Ella spends her time hanging out with her friends and looking forward to months of summer adventures, boyfriends, first kisses and all the fun of a carefree teenage life ahead of her.

She is then numbed to find out her family have decided to take in Gaeilgóirí – Irish College Students for the entire summer.

What a dread for Ella, who now has to share her bedroom with her gran and her life will be literally upside down with all these strangers in her home learning “Gaeilge” for the summer.

It will be chores for Ella, a complete upset to all her lovely summer holiday plans, her family are stressed out, but needs must, and the neighbours aren’t happy either.

Set in a fictional coastal village on the Wild Atlantic Way, where Gaeilgeoirí, and the Coláistí Gaeilge have been part of summer life for generations, Saol Ella depicts the story of Ella and a group of local teenagers, a host family and what the visiting Gaeilgeoirí bring to their lives.

There’s the upset of losing your lovely bedroom and moving out of the house and the dread this brings, the work that Mom and Dad give you for the summer and then there’s the girls coming to your road and potentially taking your boyfriends and eye candy, not to mention the drama of being a teenager.

On the other hand Coláistí Gaeilge have so many fond memories for all who attended: first time away from home without your parents, the Céilí’s, first kiss, your first boyfriend or girlfriend and of course speaking Gaeilge for three weeks not to mention outsiders meeting the native Gaeilgeoirí.

A six part drama series, Saol Ella premiered in the Eye Cinema in Galway this week ahead of its first broadcast on TG4 at 5pm on Thursday, April 20.

The lead character Ella is played by teenager Ciara Cox from An Spidéal, who’s no stranger to TG4 screens as she’s already established in TV acting as Maeve in Ros na Rún.

The transition year student said that she was “beyond thrilled” to be cast as the main character, which hits on something that she’s very familiar with.

“This is another lovely role for me and it’s very different to my character Maeve on TG4, but growing up in an Spidéal, I’m very familiar with Gaeilgeoirí visiting for the summer and the fun we have,” Ciara said.

“So its brilliant to showcase the story from a local family’s perspective and how we live our summer holidays with the Coláistí Gaeilge Students who come to learn Gaeilge”.

Directed by Eamonn de Norradh, from Navan who’s credits include Ros na Rún, Fair City and the feature film, Making It.

The cast also includes Sean McDonagh, Siobhán O’Kelly, Caitríona Ní Threasaigh and a number of wonderfully ambitious teenage actors from all over the country.

Produced by Danú Media and written by Ailbhe Nic Giolla Bhríghde and Gemma Breathnach, the drama series was filmed in an Spidéal and the south Connemara Gaeltacht area during the summer of 2022.

An official reopening of Corry’s Field park walkway will take place next week to mark the completion of €250,000 in upgrade works.

Over the past six weeks, resurfacing and upgrade works have been carried out on the paths in the lakeside park.

An official reopening ceremony will be held at the main walkway entrance next Monday, April 17 at 1:15pm.

Work on the project began in 2019 with an in-house design of the proposed walkway upgrades.

Funding for the project was allocated the following year under the “July Stimulus” Active Travel Measures during the pandemic, and planning approval was granted by An Bord Pleanála in 2022.

“The walkway has been a wonderful amenity for Loughrea Town for many years and the recent work represents a significant enhancement of this amenity.”

“The construction work is the final phase of a project that has been in the pipeline for several years,” the county council said.

The reopening will be hosted by Cathaoirleach Michael “Moegie” Maher.

Run the shores of Inis Mór to support the critically ill

Take part in the Inis Mór Half-Marathon this month on the stunning Aran Island, and support critically ill patients at the Mater.

The Aer Arann Islands Half-Marathon will take place on Inis Mór next Saturday, April 22 in aid of the Mater Foundation.

This is a wonderful opportunity to run, walk or jog in the spectacular and scenic surroundings of Inis Mór and to soak up the atmosphere, ceol and culture that the island has to offer, all while helping a worthy cause.

Funds raised from this year’s Aer Arann Islands Half Marathon will support a vital, life-saving project to secure twelve mechanical ventilators for the Mater Public Hospital’s new Intensive Care Unit.

These machines are a lifeline for critically ill patients who are fighting for their last breath. They literally save lives.

The crucial funds raised through the Half Marathon will allow doctors and nurses in the Mater to provide the very best care to these patients when they need it most.

Sunshine is set to make way for more unsettled conditions over the weekend, with rain and high temperatures of just 9 to 11 degrees forecast on Saturday.

After a bright and clear day on Friday across most of the county, Saturday will begin dry with sunny spells before cloud builds from the southwest during the morning followed by outbreaks of rain and drizzle.

Afternoon temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees are forecast by Met Éireann, with moderate southerly winds, which may be fresh at times.

Saturday night will be largely cloudy with some showers, and Sunday will start much the same with lingering patches of mist and fog.

Sunday will become drier as the day goes on, however, with some sunny spells developing.

It will also be much milder on Sunday, with high temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees, possibly reaching 18 degrees, with light to moderate southerly breezes.

Galway band The Opacas’ new documentary to screen at Eye Cinema

THE OPACAS Shine On, a new fly-on-the-wall documentary following Galway band The Opacas, will be screened in The Eye Cinema on April 22.

Young Galway film-maker, Greta Thornton,Greta Thornton followed The Opacas over the last few months as they wrote and prepared to record their tenth single, ‘Shine On’.

Greta, who won the Audience Award at the Ulster Regional finals at the 2022 Fresh International Film Festival, gained exclusive access to capture how the band create and write songs.

Shine On also involved The Opacas doing something they never did before — collaborating with a full choir.

Lead singer Steve Talbot explained that the band met Tomás Ó Cáinte after a show last year and discovered he was involved with Moycullen Musical Society.

“We had a song we did a few times in rehearsal and thought a collaboration with a choir would lift the song to a new level. Plus it would be a bit of fun to work with a full-on choir!”

Shine On is a tribute to a close colleague who passed away in his sleep in 2019. Damon Marshall was 42 when he died and The Opacas have invited his mother, father, and son, Thomas, to the screening.

“Damons sudden death was a real wake-up call for me,” said The Opacas’ Pat Boyle.

“It really brought home how transient life is, and we have to make the most of every moment we have. The song is a cry out to the universe for his spirit to ‘Shine On’.”

Rehearsals for the song took place in The Forge in Moycullen and the song was performed live in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church at the start of March.

Greta followed the band through every step of the way and captured the band writing and rehearsing the song, then working it out with the choir.

“It’s been a really creative journey for me,” said Greta, “trying out new things and doing the live recording, following the rehearsal and seeing how it built up to the gig.

“The Opacas have been very encouraging and were open to the ideas and suggestions I made.

“Meeting the band and the choir was also great and seeing how it became a kind of community. I liked connecting with all these people from different backgrounds – acting, music – and seeing how I can use that creatively as well.”

The Opacas Shine On documentary will be screened in The Eye Cinema on Saturday 22 April at 8.30pm. Tickets are on sale from www.Opacas.com

Man charged with possessing images of child sex abuse

A 35 year old man with a Galway address has appeared before court charged with the possession of child sexual abuse images.

Detective Garda Gerard Carroll gave evidence to Galway District Court of arresting and charging one Piotr Novak that morning.

Garda Carroll said that the accused made no reply to the charges after being caution.

Novak, who has an address on Fairhill Road Lower, The Claddagh has been charged with three counts of knowingly possessing a total of 2,164 images of child sexual abuse on three hard drives.

The first charge is alleged to have occurred at an address in the Claddagh on December 16, 2019, relating to 959 images.

The other two charges are alleged to have occurred on a date unknown between April 30, 2017 and December 16, 2019 at the same address, for 916 images and 289 images respectively.

All of the charges are under Section 6(1) of the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act 1998. The DPP has directed that the case should be prosecuted on indictment.

The prosecution had no objection to the accused man being granted bail, subject to certain conditions.

He must reside at the address provided to Gardaí, and sign on at a Garda station once a week each Monday.

Judge Marie Keane granted free legal aid for solicitor Michael Cunningham.

The case will next come before the District Court in May for the service of a book of evidence on the accused.

Connacht Rugby have named their matchday squad for this weekend’s URC game against Cardiff at home.

Connacht will face off against the Welsh side this Saturday at the Sportsground, with kick-off at 7:35pm Irish time.

Andy Friend said that there’s a great deal of excitement surrounding this weekend’s clash, and that everyone is focused on achieving a good outcome.

“There’s a great buzz around the place this week. We’re all very aware of the importance of tomorrow’s game, and we’re really focussed on ensuring we’re at our best from minute one to the final whistle.”

There’s a bevy of players back from injuries this week, including Captain Jack Carty and Irish international Finlay Bealham, with six total slotting into the starting XV.

Carty has missed the last 3 games with a hamstring issue, while Bealham hasn’t played since a knee injury sustained in Round 3 of the Guinness Six Nations.

Also back in play are Denis Buckley, Jarrad Butler, Josh Murphy and Diarmuid Kilgallen after overcoming injuries.

The seventh and final change from the side that lost to Benetton is the inclusion of Dylan Tierney-Martin, with Eoin de Buitléar named among the replacements.

“Having six men back from injury for this game is a huge boost for us, and it also means that we’ve had make a number of really difficult selection decisions and some quality players are missing out.”

“As much as that’s a headache, its a brilliant place to be at this time of year,” Andy Friend commented ahead of the game.

“With a big home crowd expected and with their energy behind us, we’ll be doing everything in our power to get us closer to that playoff spot”

Eight players who are departing from Connacht will be presented for the crowd at the end of the game.

Galway students win top prizes in Texaco Children’s Art Competition

Five talented Galway students have won top prizes in this year’s 69th Texaco Children’s Art Competition.

In the 7-8 years age category, the first prize was won by 8-year-old Emily Acheson from Gaelscoil Iarfhlatha, Tuam for her self-portrait.

Her work is described by Final Adjudicator, Professor Gary Granville, as “a work that captures a sense of the person behind the paint.”

Four other Galway students won Special Merit Awards for artworks that Professor Granville said “were imaginative and displayed high levels of skill and creativity.”

They were Lauren Duffy (17) from Presentation College, Tuam; Sadhbh Mitchell (7) from Scoil Mhuire, Moycullen; and Riham Hammar (6) and Blanka Matysiak (6), both pupils at Knocknacarra Educate Together National School.

The Texaco Children’s Art Competition is popularly regarded as the longest-running sponsorship in the history of arts sponsoring in Ireland, with an unbroken history that dates back to the very first Competition held in 1955.

This year, as has been the case throughout its life, it has been a platform on which young artists from Galway and counties throughout Ireland have had their talents recognised and their creativity commended.

Garda taken to hospital following car crash in Athenry

A Garda was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries following a crash in Athenry on Thursday.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a collision in Athenry yesterday evening.

The collision involved two cars, one of which was an official Garda car.

A Garda member was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries, which are understood to be non-life threatening.

An Garda Síochána have said that their inquiries are ongoing.

Cancellations and bus transfers on Galway rail services this weekend

Significant disruption is expected to train services on the Galway – Dublin rail line this weekend due to engineering works.

Irish Rail is carrying out line improvement works between Sallins and Kildare this Saturday and Sunday.

As a result of these works, a number of regularly scheduled Galway trains have been cancelled, or will be operating as bus transfers for part or all of the journey.

The bulk of the disruption will be this Saturday, with only minor alterations to train services on Sunday, April 16.

Bus transfers will cover a significant portion of journeys on Saturday, with trains from Dublin to Galway only heading as far as Athlone.

Multiple Galway – Dublin trains will only have replacement bus services for the entirety of their journey.

Another free electrical waste collection will be help for Galway County householders this weekend.

The WEEE collection event will be held this Saturday at Loughrea Mart, Station Road from 10am – 4pm this Saturday, April 15.

The collection will allow county householders to dispose of any household waste electrical items, batteries or energy-saving lightbulbs, large or small.

From phones to fridges, printers or power tools, anything with a plug or battery is accepted.

Further collections will take place over the following three weekends in Mountbellew, Maam Cross, and Gort.

These collections will allow people from towns and villages across the county to dispose of any household electrical equipment and batteries in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.

The funerals for two young teenagers killed in a tragic crash in Galway this week are being held this weekend.

Kirsty Bohan and Lukas Joyce, both just 14 years old, lost their lives in a crash outside Headford on Monday, when the car they were in hit a tree.

The funeral of Kirsty will take place at midday today in the Church of St Patrick and Cuana, followed by the burial at Downpatrick Cemetery.

Lukas Joyce will be reposing at Corrandulla Mortuary Chapel from 3pm to 7pm this afternoon for people to pay their respects.

The funeral mass will take place at 12pm in St. Brendan’s Church, Annaghdown, with burial afterwards at Annaghdown Cemetery.

Ireland Funds to award grants of up to €25,000 to non-profit organisations

The Ireland Funds has opened applications for its Heart of the Community Fund 2023, which will provide funding to non-profit organisations across the island of Ireland.

Applications are open until 9 May, and grants of between €5,000 and €25,000 will be awarded to organisations across the country.

The philanthropic network recognises the challenges organisations face in securing support to build capacity or meet their core costs.

In 2022, the Heart of the Community Fund provided support to three Galway-based non-profit organisations: Baboró International Arts Festival for Children, the Blue Teapot Theatre Company, and Helplink Mental Health.

Siobhán Gallagher, Executive Director of The Ireland Funds, said that the Heart of the Community Fund is about meeting the needs of communities all across Ireland.

“It is designed to help non-profit organisations providing key services to people in need,” she said.

“The Ireland Funds is proud to strengthen Ireland’s non-profit sector with practical help and financial support.

“We would like to thank The Ireland Funds’ network of donors for their ongoing generosity, which ensures that we can enable organisations to deliver vital supports to those across the island of Ireland who need it most.”

Dear Editor,

On April 11th, the Irish Independent published a story “Irish Government defends moving against Swiss grannies who are fighting for the climate”.

The article details a case taken by KlimaSeniorinnen (Senior Women for Climate) to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

Ireland is one of two countries volunteering verbal arguments against the KlimaSeniorinnen, who argue the Swiss government are not acting adequately to protect the health and lives of their population in the face of the climate emergency.

It shocked me to learn Ireland is not supportive of this case, so much as arguing that the ECHR does not guarantee people the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.

What is the supposed role of government in society if not to provide these attributes to its population?

Ireland was the second country to declare a climate and biodiversity emergency in 2019.
Since then, Irelands’ emissions have continued to outpace our carbon budget. We are not playing our part in reducing emissions within the context of historical emissions of the Global North.

Galway Daily news missing teen found safe

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a firearm was discharged at a property in Co. Galway in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred in the Ballydavid area of Athenry at around 12.30am.

Nobody was injured during the incident, however damage was caused to the property.

At 2.15am, a silver Ford S-MAX was then located burnt out on the outskirts of Moycullen village.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have information in relation to these incidents to come forward.

Anyone who was in the Ballydavid area of Athenry or in the Moycullen area between midnight and 2.30am, and who may have noticed a silver Ford S-MAX, is asked to contact investigating Gardaí.

Any road users with camera footage (including dash cam) are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí
