The 21st edition of the TULCA Festival of Visual Arts, entitled honey, milk and salt in a seashell before sunrise, will take place in venues across Galway from 3 to19 November.

This year’s TULCA festival is curated by Iarlaith Ní Fheorais and features a programme of multi-venue exhibitions and events including artist and curator talks, gallery tours, a performance and a film screening.

The TULCA Festival is supported by Arts Council of Ireland, Galway City Council, Galway County Council and Arts & Disability Ireland.

Contributors to honey, milk and salt in a seashell before sunrise include Áine O’Hara, Aisling-Ór Ní Aodha, Anna Roberts-Gevalt, Bog Cottage, Bridget O’Gorman, Edward Lawrenson & Pia Borg, Holly Márie Parnell, Jamila Prowse, Jenny Brady, Leila Hekmat, Nat Raha, P. Staff, Paul Roy, Philipp Gufler, Rouzbeh Shadpey, Sarah Browne and Sean Burns.

This year the TULCA team has worked with a wonderfully thoughtful and rigorous group of artists and writers that have made sensual, tender and compelling work.

The artworks in this festival explore experiences of disability, home and the intimacy of access, and have been brought together in the context of the evolving ideas around health and medicine in the West of Ireland.

Throughout the festival there are an array of talks, workshops, tours, screenings and performances to consider how landscapes and communities are shaped by these legacies, and how they influence how we see ourselves and where we call home.

TULCA has published a companion publication with essays on drawings of J.J. Beegan, the Spiddal born disability activist Martin Naughton, unionising patients, the abolitionist disability politics of the Black Panther Party, the personal archives of those committed to St. Brendan’s, Grangegorman and poetry reflecting on abolition, disability justice and home.

Writers include Alan Counihan, Carol R. Kallend, Joanna Marsden, Nat Raha, Roisin Agnew, Sami Schalk and Tone F Pone + Inky Lee.

Honey, milk and salt in a seashell before sunrise is dedicated to Ballinasloe born artist J.J. Beegan. Beegan drew on tissue paper using burnt matchsticks while living at Netherne Mental Hospital in Surrey, England.

Beegan often named himself, his profession and where he’s from, alongside images of flowers and birds, writing: “J.J. BEEGAN SCULPTERER DUNLO HILL BALLINASLOE.” Acknowledging his recalling of home, Beegan’s work will be celebrated at an event in Ballinasloe Library.

Accessibility is a core tenet of this year’s festival. TULCA are honoured to be working in collaboration with Arts & Disability Ireland to create access provision for the festival, including captioning of selected video works and training for our education team to deliver audio described tours during the festival.

In addition to this support, many films have audio described versions, with transcripts provided for soundpieces. There will be masked social events and our booklets feature access statements to support guests on their visit.

TULCA encourages guests to take their time at the festival, offering plenty of seats and spaces to rest.  Full programme details can be found at www.tulca.ie.

Gardaí cracking down on sale and supply of fireworks

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee is urging people in Galway not to misuse fireworks this year as people in the city and county prepare for Halloween.

The Minister reminded people that not only are fireworks illegal, but that they also have a highly detrimental impact on some of our most vulnerable members, including the elderly and those with sensory issues.

In support of the awareness raising activities and work of the various organisations involved in this year’s campaign Minister McEntee said she sincerely hopes that parents in particular will contemplate the fact that they can cause serious injuries before purchasing them for their children.

“A safer alternative is attending a professional fireworks displays organised in your local area or other fun Halloween events taking place in the community,” she said.

“There are serious consequences for those caught misusing fireworks. A person convicted of having fireworks in their possession with intent to sell or supply can face penalties including a fine of up to €10,000 and up to five years imprisonment.”

People urged to consider options before coming to Emergency Department this Bank Holiday

0

People in Galway are being urged to consider all healthcare options open to them before coming to the Emergency Department this bank holiday weekend.

With high attendance numbers expected at Emergency Departments, the HSE is asking people to consider other methods of care including their GP’s, pharmacists and out of hours services before presenting at Emergency Departments.

Westdoc Out of Hours GP services will be open from 6pm today Friday October 27 until 9am Tuesday October 31.

As always, people who do require emergency care are encouraged to attend EDs where they will be prioritised.

Health staff across hospital and community settings will continue to work together over the weekend to ensure all available beds across the hospital and community are in use.

Bank Holiday weekends can be a busy time for our hospitals and emergency services. This means that patients who attend EDs for routine and non-urgent treatment will experience very long waiting times over the coming weekend.

Tony Canavan, CEO of the Saolta Group said, “We are working with our community colleagues to provide the best possible service to our local population over the Bank Holiday Weekend.”

“If you need emergency care we will be there to provide it, but if it is not an emergency please consider all other care options in the first instance.”

“We expect our Emergency Departments will be busy over the bank holiday and we would ask for patience from the public as we prioritise treating those in need of urgent care.”

The Roscommon Injury Unit is also open to treat injuries that are unlikely to need hospital admission and are more convenient and often quicker than an emergency department.

Four Connacht players named for WXV3 final showdown in Dubai

0

Four Connacht players have been named to the Ireland squad for this weekend’s final round of the WXV3 against Spain at the Sevens Stadium in Dubai.

Meabh Deely and Beibhinn Parsons are in the backline of the starting XV for Saturday’s game, while Aoibheann Reilly and Nicole Fowley take their places among the replacements.

Head Coach Scott Bemand’s side have recorded two impressive wins against Kazakhstan and Colombia in the opening rounds of the campaign in Dubai.

Saturday’s showdown against Spain is set to determine the overall winners of the inaugural WXV3 title.

Regional qualifiers in 2024 will decide the identity of the three European teams to play in WXV2, but there is plenty to play this weekend.

Ireland head into the final round on top of the standings, a point ahead of Spain and a points difference of +131.

Ireland, therefore, only need to avoid defeat in Dubai to claim the first-ever WXV 3 title.

Commenting on the squad announcement, Bemand said, “Competition for places in this final round squad has been high, this is exactly where we want to be.”

“It has taken 31 players to get to this point and both this squad and individuals have grown over these three weeks.”

“We have previous history with Spain and we know this will be a level up of competition that this squad needs to test itself against.”

“It’s great to see Aoife Wafer back in the group, after some time away from international rugby and looking forward to seeing what this team’s best performance can look like.”

Saturday’s match is available to stream for free on RugbyPass TV, while there will be live updates on Irish Rugby social media channels.

Four Galway towns and villages still discharging raw sewage

0
Galway Daily news Four Galway towns and villages still discharging raw sewage

Four towns and villages in Galway were still discharging raw sewage into waterways in mid-2023 according to the latest EPA report.

The most recent Urban Waste Water Treatment Report found that Roundstone, Carraroe, Spiddal, and Ahascragh were all still discharging raw sewage in the middle of this year.

The report found that 26 towns and villages are still discharging raw sewage, with Uisce Eireann committing to eliminating the majority by 2025.

Progress has been made on shortening that list, with six villages connected to new wastewater treatment plants in 2022.

Launching the report, Dr Tom Ryan, EPA Director said that this progress was encouraging, but added that, “waste water remains a significant pressure on Ireland’s water ways and is adversely impacting water quality.”

“The pace at which Uisce Éireann is delivering improvements needs to accelerate to prevent pollution and protect water quality.

He added, “Uisce Éireann must take the opportunity of its new investment plan for 2025 to 2029 to deliver waste water infrastructure that meets the needs of our society and protects and improves our environment into the future.”

“The investment plan must prioritise resources to prevent pollution in the priority areas highlighted by the EPA.”

In other bad news from the report, it found that less than half of Ireland’s wastewater, 45 percent, met with EU standards.

However, a lot of this volume is in the capital, and that number is expected to shift significantly when the upgrade of Ireland’s largest treatment plant at Ringsend in Dublin is complete.

Galway actress Ciara Cox nominated for Réalt Óg na Bliana at Oireachtas Media Awards 2023

Galway actress Ciara Cox nominated for Réalt Óg na Bliana at Oireachtas Media Awards 2023

The much sought-after Gradam Cumarsáid takes place next week during the annual Oireachtas 2023, and a promising young Galway actress is up for an award.

Ciara Cox, who hails from Spiddal in Connemara has been nominated in the Réalt Óg na Bliana category of the awards.

Cox caught the eyes of the judges for her role in the brand new TG4 teenage drama series Saol Ella, for which she received her nomination. She also plays the part of Maeve in the long-running TG4 drama series Ros na Rún.

The Oireachtas na Samhna 2023 opens next Wednesday, November 1 in the INEC Killarney.

The prestigious annual event celebrates the Irish Language, its Culture, Heritage, Music, Song, Dance, its people and artists, and Irish Language Media, including actors, journalists, and programming across all media platforms.

The Gradam Cumarsáid takes place on the opening day of the festival, and Galwegians can help Ciara land the award by texting Gradam2 to 51500.

Saol Ella is centred on the story of teenage girl Ella who’s growing up in a fictional coastal village on the Wild Atlantic Way, where Gaeilgeoirí, and the Coláistí Gaeilge have been part of summer life for generations.

It depicts the story of Ella and a group of local teenagers, a host family and what the visiting Gaeilgeoirí bring to their lives.

Ciara Cox as main character Ella in new TG4 teen drama limited series Saol Ella

Bursting with excitement to be getting out of school, hanging out with her friends and 3 months of summer adventures, boyfriends, first kisses and all the fun of a carefree teenage life ahead of her, Ella is numbed to find out her father has decided to take in Gaeilgóirí – Irish College Students for the entire summer.

Ciara Cox is no stranger to TG4’s TV screens as she’s grown up on the set of the highly popular drama series Ros na Rún where she plays the part of Meave.

Ciara first joined Ros na Rún at the tender age of 8 to play the part of Maeve and quickly fell in love with her after-school activity of TV acting.

Now 17 in reality and in 5th year in Coláiste Croí Mhuire an Spidéal, Ciara Cox has the acting bug and successfully combines her school work with her growing TV Irish language acting career.

“From the moment I auditioned for the part of Maeve with Ros na Rún, I’ve been in my element, learning lines, and picking up tips from my wonderful fellow Ros na Rún actors.”

“My parents tell me I’m always performing lots of amateur dramatics at home but it’s only because I love acting,” smiles Ciara Cox.

“My years with Ros na Rún have increased my passion for acting and developed my TV acting skills and to be successful in achieving the lead role with Saol Ella was beyond my wildest dreams.”

“I absolutely loved Ella and being part of a teenage drama and thank the Gradam Cumarsáid for my wonderful nomination as a Réalt Óg na Bliana”, she added.

Monumental €3 million donation to Croí will have “transformational” impact

A more than €3 million gift for Croí Heart & Stroke charity has been called a “once in a lifetime transformational” donation which will allow great accomplishments.

The legacy gift from the Joe & Helen O’Toole Charitable Trust, in memory of the late well-known Tuam business couple, will fund what the charity has described as ‘transformational community projects’ aimed at preventing stroke and supporting stroke survivors.

Announcing details of how the legacy gift will be used, Croí CEO Neil Johnson outlined two separate but interconnected components to a major initiative which will literally save lives and greatly improve the quality of life for many stroke survivors and their families.

First of those will be the purchase custom design of two mobile health units which will be used for early detection of stroke and cardiac risk in the community.

When ready they will also be able to be used as mobile community education and awareness centres as required.

The two units, an articulated truck and a large Mercedes van will be custom built and equipped to travel throughout the west of Ireland and indeed nationally. In addition to the vehicles the legacy fund will also help support staffing and running costs.

The second project underwritten by this donation will be the construction of  a new dedicated stroke building which will be connected by a link corridor to the main Croí Heart & Stroke Centre in Newcastle, Galway.

This new custom-built facility will be used to provide a stroke recovery day program for those recovering from stroke.

The legacy fund will also support the appointment of specialist staff to develop and deliver this much needed service, and a minibus, already purchased, to transport patients and their carers.

Croí CEO Neil Johnson said, “This unbelievably generous and unexpected gift from the Joe & Helen Charitable O’Toole Trust, Tuam, is a once in a lifetime transformational donation which will allow Croí undertake lifesaving work in the community.”

“This mobile health infrastructure will bring Croí to every corner of the west of Ireland, providing free assessment and early detection of stroke and cardiac risk which we know will save lives.”

“The new Croí Stroke Hub will provide a much-needed community day program to support stroke survivors and their carer’s – currently no such facility exists in the west of Ireland. This building will be a living legacy to the memory and kindness of Joe & Helen O’Toole”.

Joe O’Toole’s career in the retail industry began in the 1940s when assisting his father and uncle in a travelling shop that serviced the region around Headford, Co. Galway.

In 1967, he opened his own venture, a small supermarket on Bishop Street, Tuam which has developed into the current O’Toole’s Supervalu store, the Palace Restaurant, and the adjoining department/hardware store.

“Joe and Helen believed in supporting worthy local causes and investing in community projects” said trustee Mattie O’Toole.

“During their lifetimes, the O’Toole’s donated significant sums to community, sporting, cultural and spiritual projects and the trust is honoured to continue this legacy of charitable giving in their memory.”

Croí Chairman, Mark Gantly said that the chairty is, “deeply indebted to the Joe & Helen O’Toole Charitable Trust for this landmark donation, the first of its magnitude in the history of Croí.”

“This legacy gift allows Croí to fast track a number of strategic initiatives in response to unmet local need which otherwise would have taken many years to address.”

“The real beneficiaries are those recovering from the often devastating impact of a stroke. We will be forever grateful to the Trust for this remarkably supportive gift”.

Footpath maintenance should be priority in Galway city

Galway Daily news IBAL litter survey

Cllr Alan Curran of the Social Democrats has called for an increase in funding for a dedicated footpath maintenance team for the city.

He said that there are growing concerns regarding the deteriorating state of public footpaths all over the city making it difficult for users to navigate our streets.

At the last council meeting on 9 October, it was confirmed to Cllr Curran that no resources were available within the roads department to fund a maintenance team.

“The city wide network of footpaths is twice the length of our road network, and yet while funding is readily available to maintain and improve our road network, there is no dedicated team to ensure our footpaths are in a decent condition for all users,” said Cllr Curran.

“Broken and uneven surfaces, encroaching grass, overhanging branches and accumulated leaf litter cause significant accessibility issues for users, especially those pushing buggies, wheelchairs and those with mobility devices.”

He said that the fragmented nature of our walking network where footpaths abruptly end, forcing pedestrians to share the road has been well documented, and there have been many calls from local community groups all over the city to complete these links.

Social Democrat candidate for Galway Central, Eibhlín Seoighthe, said that some residents have been waiting over 30 years for a footpath to be extended in their communities such as Maunsells Road, Shantalla and Newcastle Road.

New residential developments all over the city are still being approved and built without footpaths linking these developments to local services, she said.

“With more people choosing more active means of getting around it is high time that narrow, broken, disappearing and non-existent footpaths are identified, repaired and built to ensure they are suitable for all to use.”

Works to improve the water network in Loughrea Town are continuing with Uisce Éireann working to lift the Boil Water Notice affecting customers there as soon as possible.

The project, being carried out in partnership with Galway County Council, involves the replacement of 1.8km of cast iron water mains with new pipework.

Uisce Éireann’s Justin Doran explained that as sections of the existing cast iron network are replaced, Uisce Éireann and Galway County Council will be in a position to consult with the HSE with a view to lifting the Boil Water Notice in sections.

“Crews are currently working on replacing 619m of the 1.8km of old cast iron water mains, which is a critical step in safeguarding the water supply to homes and businesses in Loughrea ensuring a safer, more sustainable water supply,” he said.

“We acknowledge the inconvenience that customers on this supply are experiencing and would like to reassure them that we are working as quickly and as efficiently as possible to complete this vital programme of works for the town and provide them with a safe and secure water supply for generations to come.”

Two organisations in Galway have been successful in receiving funding from the Vhi Health and Wellbeing Fund.

CURVE and Venture Out Wilderness Project are among 13 organisations in Ireland to receive funding for projects which aim to strengthen resilience in young people and help them manage anxiety.

Non-profit organisations who work with young people in Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny and Limerick were invited to apply for a share of the €100,000 fund.

Curve is a voluntary organisation set up in August 2022 in response to Ukrainian residents arriving to Esker Monastery in Athenry.

Their mission is to build a representative body of residents and volunteers at Esker Monastery to ensure positive outcomes for all.

The funding received from Vhi will support the delivery of its Young Adult Leaders Programme. Over the course of a week, 12 young adults aged 16 to 20 will receive leadership training in order to lead a confidence camp for events for children aged 12/13 in the locality.

Venture Out Wilderness Project offers a range of creative and innovative nature based programmes and interventions to support young people from disadvantaged communities requiring support to manage adversity and affect positive change in their lives.

The funding they received will support them in continuing to deliver and expand their ‘Two Wolves Health & Wellbeing Programme’.

This is an experiential school-based programme for young boys and men, aiming to promote their health and wellbeing, while also addressing issues around what it is to be a man in today’s world.

In addition to the funding, Vhi introduced a new element this year through the creation and delivery of a bespoke Trauma Informed Care & Wellness programme. The programme was made available to all of the successful youth groups, with 28 youth leaders participating in the sessions.

Karen Blake, Client Relationship Manager, Vhi, said that they are delighted that this year another 13 innovative projects are benefitting from the Health & Wellbeing Fund.

“In addition, we were really pleased to introduce a bespoke Trauma Informed Care & Wellness programme for youth workers,” she said.

“The aim of this programme is to equip the youth workers with the necessary skills in mental health and wellbeing to support both the young people they work with and their own personal wellbeing and resilience.

“Clinical Psychologists and Health Coaches from Vhi delivered a series of guided sessions to youth leaders designed to improve skills in physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing to pass on to young people in their projects and to their peers.

“The uptake and reaction to the programme has been very positive and demonstrates how important access to this type of training is. We had 28 youth leaders participate in the programme this year and I hope that’s a number we can grow in the future.”

Galway County Council to get rid of outdated website

galway daily news council website

Galway County Council’s current website is outdated, old and not giving the county the profile it deserves, Cllr Andrew Reddington has said.

Cllr Reddington brought up the issue of the website at the plenary meeting of Galway County Council on Monday, where he said the executive should invest in a much-needed update.

He said that he doesn’t believe the website is operating the way it should be, and that he has tried to download forms and there are forms that are outdated still on the system.

“The graphics, links and the whole image of it are not appealing. We need to sell this great county better than we are he stated. The website could be a great tool to promote our county,” he said.

“When I look at Mayo County Councils website, the first thing that pops up is ‘how can I help you’ unfortunately the Galway County Councils website is more challenging to navigate.”

Reddington said that having a good online presence, particularly a website, can improve the council’s credibility across the country.

“He stated at the meeting that the social media aspect of the council doing their business was excellent with regular updates on jobs available but I do be embarrassed with the website when I log on.

“Liam Conneally CEO of Galway County Council stated that this was something he wanted to work on straight away, he said he was openly disappointed with the website and had planned to get a team together immediately to improve it and this was the first item he had raised with his team since he took over as CEO.”

Cllr Reddington sincerely thanked Mr Conneally for his commitment to do this so early in his tenure as CEO and believed this investment would be a game changer for the county.
