The majority of residents at a nursing home in Co. Galway have tested positive for Covid-19.

Twenty-two out of 24 residents at the Nightingale Nursing Home in Ballinasloe have tested positive for the virus and a number of staff have been infected.

It is understood one of the residents at the nursing home has died from Covid-19 and that the nursing home has contacted the HSE for help.

Local Doctor Martin Daly tweeted this morning about the situation, saying there has only been one nurse and one carer available in the last 72 hours, as all other staff tested positive.

The doctor says one person has died and another is very ill and that the Nursing Home has said that no help is available from the HSE.

“This is an emergency,” he said. “We were told Nursing Homes would be supported after the disaster in April and May. They need help today.”

Denis Naughten TD for Roscommon-Galway has been in contact with HSE management and the nursing home, and has also spoken to Minsiter Stephen Donnelly about the situation.

The HSE and the Nightingale Nursing Home have been contacted for comment.

A previous version of this story stated that 26 of 28 residents tested positive. The director of nursing at Nightingale Nursing Home has confirmed that 22 of 24 residents have tested positive.Â
