Galway City Council has issued a temporary swimming ban for Ballyloughane due to elevated bacteria levels.

High levels of E. Coli bacteria were detected in samples taken from the beach on Monday, July 31.

This is likely due to “suspected contaminated urban runoff” the council said in the notification of the ban.

The ban is expected to be lifted sometime this week, the notification stated.

Further samples were taken on Tuesday, and the swimming ban will be updated when their results are available.
