Galway daily news Seven week road closure in downtown Galway City

Cleanup of the damage from recent storms and other damaging weather in Galway County is ongoing this week, with the council still removing fallen trees.

Galway County Council has closed a local road just outside Portumna for three days this week to facilitate the removal of multiple fallen trees.

The Shannon Road leading down to Lough Derg is closed at the Portumna Swimming Area end near the water.

The work got underway on Tuesday, and the road is scheduled to remain closed until Thursday, August 27 while the removal work is underway.

A status orange weather warning was in effect for Galway until Tuesday afternoon, and last week Storm Ellen caused significant damage across the county with trees downed by wind and other debris.

“A section of the Shannon Rd., Portumna L – 4321-1 – at the swimming area end of the Shannon Road, is currently closed to the public from 25/08/2020 to 27/08/2020 to facilitate the removal of fallen trees as a result of the recent storms,” the county council said on Facebook.
