An East Galway TD has called on all motor insurers to clarify which discount premiums or refunds will be given to customers in response to the pandemic.

Minister Ciaran Cannon has said this would ensure a ‘level playing field’ for all motorists in the county and he is urging insurers to make sure that precise details of these discounts or refunds are made available as soon as possible.

“Recently, my colleague Minister Donohoe called on insurers to be pro-active on behalf of motor insurance policyholders during this exceptionally difficult period and especially given the reduction in road journeys due to restrictions and the consequent reduction in claims,” said the East Galway TD.

“I’m pleased therefore to note that in the past few days, some motor insurers have agreed to discount premiums or give refunds to customers in recognition of the pandemic which will give additional financial relief to motorists in the county and especially those who may have recently been reduced significantly in terms of their income.

“I would now urge all motor insurers to ensure they give discount premiums or refunds to customers so that there is a level playing field for all customers in Galway and we don’t have a situation whereby some insurers discount while others don’t.”
