Man killed in car crash near Ballinasloe

A man in his 70s has been killed following a car crash near Ballinasloe last night.

The crash happened at roughly 8:30 on Tuesday night on the Ballinasloe to Laurencetown road according to gardaí.

The car, of which the driver was the only occupant, crashed into a wall at Sycamore hill.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to University Hospital Galway where a post mortem will take place.

The road remains closed this morning for a technical examination of the scene takes places.

Road diversions are in place while awaiting the examination.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information or who may have witnessed anything to contact Ballinasloe Garda station at 090 963 1890, the Garda confidential telephone line 1800 66 111 or any Garda station.
