Man in his 40s dies after getting into difficulty while swimming

A man in his 40s has died following after getting into trouble in the water on the west coast of Ireland last night.

The man was pronounced dead at University Hospital Galway, after being airlifted to the hospital following a rescue operation last night.

Two swimmers got into difficulty off the coast at Fanore Beach in north county Clare at approximately 9:30pm on Tuesday.

A multi-agency operation took place involving units of the Doolin Coast Guard, the Aran Islands RNLI, Gardaí and emergency services, and the Rescue 115 Coast Guard helicopter.

A statement from An Garda Síochána said “Gardaí were called by the Coastguard to attend the scene of an incident at approximately 9:30pm on Tuesday, 12th July 2022 at Fanore Beach, Co. Clare.”

“A male in his 40s got into difficulty while swimming and was removed from the water.”

“He was taken to University Hospital Galway where he was pronounced deceased.”
