University Hospital Galway is the most overcrowded hospital in the State today with 50 patients waiting for a bed.

There are 418 people on trolleys across the country today according to figures published by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO).

University Hospital Limerick is the second most overcrowded with 45 people awaiting admission to a bed, followed by Cork University Hospital with 43.

Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinasloe has eight people waiting on trolleys today.

The INMO called for immediate action at UHG earlier this month to deal with the number of people on trolleys.

“Hospital management need to cancel all non-urgent elective procedures at the hospital. Safe patient care must be a priority,” the organisation said in a statement.

They said that this level of overcrowding in Galway and indeed across the country in July is not normal and should not be treated as such.

“Hospital management and the HSE need to take short, medium and long-term action.”
