Almost 200 pupils from eight Galway national schools attended a ‘Healthy Heroes’ event at University of Galway aimed at educating children about the importance of healthy lifestyles.

The event hosted by The Paediatric Society, which covered nutrition and dental hygiene, exercise and mental health, eye health, and even the all-important teddy bear hospital.

The children were in for a treat when they received a very special visit from ‘Bumbleance’ – the Ireland’s National Children’s Ambulance.

A team from Specsavers Headford Road led six presentations, with optical director Miriam Murphy bringing a basket of healthy foods to show the children.

She answered their interesting questions, including the humorous “can you eat the jelly in your eye?!”

To encourage the children’s participation, all of them were given a free sight test voucher for the store.

A raffle was held for each group, and one lucky child from each group won an Easons gift card.

Miriam Murphy said they were thrilled to have been a part of such an important initiative.

“It was great to see so many young children engaged and interested in learning about eye health,” she said.

“I was so impressed by their enthusiasm and interest, and it was a pleasure to answer their questions. I hope to see more events like this in the future.”
