A high-level meeting between the Saolta hospital group and the HSE is to take place on 2 March, Senator Seán Kyne has said.

The Galway senator, who is a member of the Oireachtas Health Committee, said that Saolta CEO Tony Canavan has confirmed to him that a meeting will take place to advance the Emergency Department project.

Enabling works are currently taking place on site at UHG but sign off for lodging the planning application has been ‘stubbornly slow’ according to Senator Kyne who raised the delay in a Seanad debate last month.

“Nothing can be built without planning permission and finalisation of the planning design for the ED and Maternity and Paediatric units is necessary to allow the project to progress,” said Senator Kyne.

“I will continue to pursue this vital project for Galway and its delivery on the site identified at UHG.

“Staff have to endure conditions that are not fit for purpose and patients likewise attend in cramped and crowded conditions.”
