The move to a multi-million euro new ambulance base at Merlin Park Hospital has been delayed by an ongoing industrial dispute.

The ambulance service in Galway have been operating out of temporary facilities for a number of years, whether prefabs at Merlin Park, or another temporary facility at UHG.

A €4.9 million new base at Merlin Park Hospital has now been completed, and is ready to become operational.

However, in a written answer to a question by councillor John Connolly for this week’s meeting of the Regional Health Forum, it was said that no clear date could be given for when the base would be occupied.

This is due to an ongoing industrial dispute, with SIPTU advising that staff are seeking some form of compensation for the move.

This dispute has since been referred to the Workplace Relations Commission, which has held up the move to the new ambulance base.
