One man has been arrested and charged as part of an organised crime investigation in Galway which has seen Gardaí freeze accounts bearing cryptocurrency worth $900,000, along with over €18,000 in drugs.
As part of ongoing investigations into organised crime, Gardaí executed search warrants at two properties in Galway City on Monday.
The operation was carried out by officers from the Galway Divisional Drugs Unit, with support from local Garda units.
Following the operation two cryptocurrency accounts with a combined current value of approximately $900,000 have been frozen pending further investigation. A bank account containing €25,000 was also frozen.
The searches also resulted in the seizure of:
• Cash totalling €9,300
• Amphetamine with an estimated value of €9,000
• Cannabis with an estimated value of €9,300
A male in his 40s was arrested and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in the North Western Region.
He has since been charged in connection with the investigation and is scheduled to appear before Galway District Court on Thursday, August 27.
