A protest has been planned for Galway city following the murder of Sarah Everard in London this month which has sparked widepread anger across the world.

The socially distanced protest organised by ROSA will take place in Eyre Square at 6.30pm on Thursday, March 18. The group is asking those attending to wear masks and bring posters.

Other #ReclaimTheStreets protests are planned for Dublin, Belfast, Cork and Limerick this week following the horrific femicide of Sarah Everard, who went missing after walking home from a friends house in London on March 3.

Wayne Couzens, a serving police officer, has been charged with Sarah’s kidnap and murder.

Police in London were then widely criticised for what many saw as a disproportionate response to a vigil held to mourn the 33-year-old, with officers making four arrests and surrounding and in some cases manhandling mourners.

ROSA said that it stands against the ‘disgusting repression and police violence’ displayed at the vigil.

“The police are not only defending their own but also the whole system that perpetuates the gender violence and misogyny women experience every day and are now protesting against,” the feminist movement said.

The reponse to the London vigil was met with outrage, with many pointing out the obvious differences in the way large groups of Rangers supporters were treated by police on the streets of Glasgow just two weeks ago.
