Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) has appointed Dr George Onofrei as the new Head of their School of Business.

Prior to coming down to Galwat, Dr Onofrei was Senior Lecturer at Letterkenny IT. He has over 15 years’ experience in academia as well as considerable industry practice within the automotive, food and retail sector.

Commenting on his appointment, Dr Onofrei said, “I look forward to continuing the development of new programmes and creating new opportunities within the School of Business working with both staff and industry partners”.

The new head of the business school holds a PhD in the area of Operations and Supply Chain Management from UCD, and has published in a number of journals in research areas including  supply chain practices, sustainability, business data analytics and more.

Dr Orla Flynn, President of GMIT, said that she is very pleased to welcome him to the staff at GMIT, noting that meeting the “business educational needs” of students and industry partners in the west is a priority for them.

Dr Onofrei succeeds Professor Graham Heaslip who was appointed Head of the GMIT School of Engineering, following Gerard MacMichael’s retirement.

“As we move forward in 2022 with partners in IT Sligo and Letterkenny IT towards becoming a Technological University, growing a strong range of business educational offerings, including research, will become an increasingly central part of our mission. I wish Dr Onofrei every success in his role.”
