Almost a quarter of a million euro worth of cannabis, bound for Galway and Dublin, was seized this week.

Revenue Commissioners carried out a raid at a premises in Athlone on Thursday based on risk profiling.

With the assistance of drug detector dog Enzo, parcels containing 11.8kgs of herbal cannabis were uncovered.

The drugs, which have an estimated value of €236,000, were discovered in parcels originating from France and Spain and were destined for addresses in Dublin and Galway.

This was one of three serious drug seizures carried out by the Revenue Commissioners on Thursday, January 4.

Revenue officers seized 4.5kgs of herbal cannabis, valued at €90,000 at Shannon Airport with the assistance of detector dog Harley.

The illicit drugs were discovered in parcels originating from the USA and were destined for addresses in Clare, Limerick and Cork.

Another 14.2kgs of cannabis with a value of €285,000 was uncovered during the examination of parcels at a premises in Dublin.
