Galway Daily news Council approves plan to remove asbestos roof from community centre

Galway County Council has granted planning approval for the removal and replacement of an asbestos roof in Oranmore Community Centre.

Oranmore Park Committee applied for planning permission in February to remove the existing asbestos roof from the Community Centre at Frenchfort, Oranmore.

After this has been done the Committee intends to replace it with a new roof made of 100mm composite panels.

Oranmore Community Centre is equipped with multiple meeting rooms, a large hall, and an astro/ball wall available for local community groups.

Other work which will be part of this project includes installing new guttering and edge details, and a connection to existing downpipes and outlets.

The county council granted permission for the removal and replacement of the roof with a total of four conditions attached.

Before any work commences the Park Committee must satisfy the council’s environment section that the asbestos roof material is being removed by a suitable specialist contractor.

Afterwards it must be “disposed of through a suitably licensed asbestos disposal operator” and a full report furnished to the council.
