Tributes have been paid to the Kurdish family of three who were killed in a horrific crash on the M6 motorway in Galway this week.

Couple Karzan Sabah and Shahen Qasm, and their eight month old baby girl Lena were killed in a three car collision on the motorway near Ballinasloe on Thursday evening.

Karzan Saba came to Ireland in 2017 as a PhD student studying agriculture at NUI Galway.

The Kurdish Irish expressed its deepest sympathies to their families. “May their souls be returned to Allah and let them rest in peace. God rest their souls.”

In a statement, the group said that the family “loved Galway and all of its inhabitants” and always had time for anyone in the community.

Repatriation of the families remains is being organised to bring them home to Kurdistan.

The fourth person killed in the collision was a Polish national driving the wrong way on the motorway. A woman in the third car was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
