Galway Daily news man dies in hospital following traffic collision

A body has been recovered in the search for a swimmer who went missing off the coast of Galway more than a week ago.

Máire Ní Fhátharta (32) went missing from Silverstrand last Tuesday, November 12, and searches have been taking place since then.

Gardaí, Irish Coastguard, RNLI, Civil Defence and a number of local and national search units, along with hundreds of volunteers have carried out searches over the past 11 days.

This afternoon, Friday, November 22, a body was recovered near Rusheen Bay, Co. Galway.

The body has been transferred to the morgue at University Hospital Galway, where a post-mortem examination is due to take place.

The search has for now been stood down, however formal identification has yet to occur and this process remains ongoing.

An Garda Síochána has appointed a Family Liaison Officer for the relatives of the deceased.

An Garda Síochána would like to thank the local community in Galway, volunteer organisations, and search & recovery services for their care and assistance over the past eleven days.”
