A man has appeared in court to face a sexual assault charge which allegedly occurred in Galway City in 2019.

The 31 year old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was brought before a sitting of Galway District Court today.

The court heard evidence of his being arrested, charged, and cautioned today.

He has been charged with a single count of sexual assault against a female under the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act 1990.

The offence is alleged to have occurred at a residential address in Galway City in 2019.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the case should be tried on indictment.

Sgt Cathal Rogers said that the state was not objecting to bail, with certain conditions attached.

He is to reside at a given address, be reachable by mobile at all times, and sign on at a designated Garda station once a week.

He is also to have no contact with the complainant or any witnesses in this case by any means, including social media.

The case was adjourned until July 14 for the service of a book of evidence on the accused.
