Galway County Council has launched a new art competition for primary school students celebrating the county’s Blue Flag beaches.

For the competition, students simply have to design and paint a depiction of one of the county’s Blue Flag beaches.

These include:

  • Trá an Dóilín, An Cheathrú Rua
  • Loughrea Lake,
  • An Trá Mhór, Coill Rua, Indreabhán (stream inlet)
  • Trá Chill Mhuirbhigh, Inis Mór
  • Traught Beach, Kinvara
  • Portumna Bathing Area

The art competition will run until July 31, and is open to all primary aged children from Junior Infants to Sixth Class.

Prizes will be awarded for the best pictures in each group, and the winning entries will be displayed on the county council website.

For more information contact the council’s environment section at 091 509 510.

The Blue Flag awards are one of the most recognised eco-labels in the world, recognising beaches for their compliance with sewage treatment and bathing water quality criteria.

The programme aims to raise environmental awareness and promote sound environmental management of beaches, marinas and eco-tourism boats around the world.

Galway has eight beaches which currently hold the Blue Flag, with the six in the county listed above joined by Silverstrand and Salthill beaches in the city.
