Samaritans will be at the Ballinasloe October Fair on the festival’s final weekend, ready to support anyone struggling to cope.
Up to 80,000 people are expected to visit Ballinasloe for one of Europe’s oldest horse fairs. For many it’s a highlight of the year, but some may feel alone in the crowd or find the week challenging.
Volunteers from the Samaritans Festival branch will be in town at the following times to listen to and support anyone in need or distress:
- Friday 10th October, Dunlow Street (near Horse & Man Statue) 8pm to 11pm
- Saturday 11th October, Fair Green, 11am to 5pm
- Saturday 11th October, Dunlow Street (near Horse & Man Statue) 8pm to 11pm
This is the first year Samaritans also attend the fair’s opening Sunday yesterday.
Sean Breathnach, Samaritans volunteer and Festival Director, encouraged anyone who needs support to reach out. “Over the coming weeks, our volunteers will be on the streets of Ballinasloe, ready to support anyone struggling with their thoughts,” he said.
“For the first time, we’ll be at the fair on opening Sunday and the final weekend, allowing us to reach early attendees who might otherwise miss us. We know the October Fair is a celebration for many, but for others it can be a difficult time. Whether you’re at the fair or at home, remember you’re not alone.”
Sean added that talking to a stranger can sometimes be easier than opening up to someone close to you.
“There’s something powerful about being able to speak honestly to someone who is going to really listen and isn’t going to judge you,” he added. “That’s what we offer, someone to listen, in person, for as long as it takes.”
Samaritans Festival Branch volunteers attend around seven festivals each summer, supporting hundreds of people in the process. Samaritans is also available 24 hours a day, seven days a week on freephone 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.ie.
