Returning for its ninth year the award-winning Food On The Edge has launched its 2024 programme. The theme of this year’s event is A Sense of Place.

Food On The Edge is a coming together of international and national chefs and food influencers to listen, talk and debate about the future of food in our industry and on our planet.

Previous speakers included Elena Reygadas, Aditi Dugar, Andrea Petrini, Darina Allen, Tom Jenkins, Jason Bangerter, and many more visionary change-promoting agents.

JP McMahon, Founder of Food On The Edge, said, “The theme ‘a sense of place’ is particularly appropriate given our return to Galway this year. Galway is where I have put down roots and established my businesses including Aniar restaurant.”

“Aniar meaning ‘of the West’ celebrates the produce of the west of Ireland and I think it’s wonderful to experience the authenticity of food from a region.”

“The theme of ‘a sense of place’ from the perspective of Food on the Edge is not limited to speaking of and championing the Terroir of a region, rather I hope it also sparks debate about instances where we have lost a sense of place”.

After three years at Airfield Estate in Dublin, Food On The Edge is back in its hometown of Galway.

Speaking at the launch which took place in the Atlantic Technological University (ATU),  Dr Orla Flynn, President of ATU  said, “Since its inception in 2015 it has always been one of the most significant events on the Irish food calendar, with chefs, food writers, broadcasters, academics, artists and food producers congregating to celebrate all that is wonderful about Irish food.”

“We are thrilled to be hosting Food on the Edge in ATU Galway City in October later this year, and our culinary teams across ATU are eagerly looking forward to participating in what I expect will be an event to remember”.

A newcomer to Food On The Edge this year is Sophie Healy-Thow, who has received a Global Citizen Prize for work in poverty and food security, one of five winners of the prestigious prize recognised at the Global Citizen awards ceremony in New York.

Sophie is a 26-year-old from Kinsale in Cork and founder of Act4Food. Act4Food Act4Change is a youth-led and initiated campaign that mobilises the power of young people to call for a global food system which provides everyone with access to safe, affordable and nutritious diets, while simultaneously protecting nature, tackling climate change and promoting human rights.

A speaker making his debut at Food On The Edge is Matthew James Duffy. He has fifteen years of international industry experience, from speciality bakeries to Michelin-starred restaurants.

He is now a Professor of Baking and Pastry Arts Management at Centennial College in Toronto and is following his passion for baking. Matthew found his niche and exploded on the sourdough scene with over 480K social media followers.

He enjoys being able to share his knowledge and passion to influence and encourage people to explore the vast and versatile world of baking.

Returning to Food On The Edge is Ebru Baybara Demir who previously spoke in 2019 and has since won the Basque Culinary World Prize in 2023. She is a distinguished Turkish chef, social entrepreneur, and advocate for sustainable agriculture and social development.

She is renowned for her innovative approach to blending traditional Turkish cuisine with modern culinary techniques and her commitment to social impact through food.

Enhanced Security and Privacy: Exploring the Advantages of Trading on a Decentralized Exchange

0
Galway Daily news HSE attack: Gardaí urge potential victims to make contact

Introduction

Decentralized exchanges (DEX) have emerged as a crucial component of the cryptocurrency ecosystem, offering users a secure and private way to trade digital assets. In this article, we will delve into the benefits of trading on DEX platforms, with a focus on the enhanced security and privacy they provide compared to centralized exchanges (CEX). For those looking to explore this topic further, more info here that can help deepen your understanding of the advantages and nuances of DEX platforms.

Understanding Decentralized Exchanges (DEX)

Decentralized exchanges operate without a central authority, utilizing smart contracts to facilitate peer-to-peer trading of cryptocurrencies. Unlike centralized exchanges, which require users to deposit funds into a centralized wallet, DEX platforms allow users to retain control of their assets until a trade is executed. This decentralization eliminates the need for a trusted third party to oversee transactions, reducing the risk of theft or hacking.

Security Features of DEX

One of the key advantages of trading on DEX platforms is enhanced security. By decentralizing the exchange process, DEX eliminates the risk of a single point of failure. This means that even if a DEX platform is compromised, the decentralized nature of the network ensures that user funds remain secure.

Smart contract technology plays a crucial role in securing transactions on DEX platforms. These self-executing contracts automatically facilitate and verify transactions, reducing the risk of fraud or manipulation. Additionally, DEX platforms often use multi-signature wallets, requiring multiple parties to approve a transaction, further enhancing security.

Privacy Enhancements in DEX Trading

Privacy is another major advantage of trading on DEX platforms. Unlike centralized exchanges, which require users to provide personal information and undergo identity verification, DEX platforms allow for anonymous or pseudonymous trading. This means that users can trade without revealing their identity, protecting their privacy and reducing the risk of identity theft.

The protection of user data and identity is a top priority for DEX platforms. By eliminating the need for users to disclose personal information, DEX platforms reduce the risk of data breaches and identity theft. Additionally, DEX platforms often use encryption and other security measures to protect user data from unauthorized access.

Reduced Counterparty Risk on DEX

Trading on DEX platforms also reduces counterparty risk. Centralized exchanges act as intermediaries between buyers and sellers, holding custody of user funds until a trade is executed. This introduces the risk of the exchange becoming insolvent or being hacked, leading to loss of funds.

DEX platforms, on the other hand, facilitate peer-to-peer trading, eliminating the need for a central authority to hold custody of funds. This trustless nature of transactions reduces counterparty risk, as users retain control of their assets until a trade is completed.

Accessibility and Global Reach of DEX

DEX platforms also offer greater accessibility and global reach compared to centralized exchanges. By removing geographical restrictions, DEX platforms allow users from around the world to trade digital assets without the need for a traditional banking infrastructure. This inclusivity is particularly beneficial for users in regions with limited access to financial services.

Furthermore, DEX platforms empower financially underserved populations by providing them with access to a global marketplace. This can have a transformative impact on economies that are currently excluded from the traditional financial system, enabling greater financial inclusion and economic empowerment.

Challenges and Future Prospects

While DEX platforms offer numerous benefits, they also face challenges such as scalability issues and regulatory uncertainty. Scalability remains a significant challenge for DEX platforms, as they strive to handle increasing transaction volumes without compromising security or efficiency. Additionally, regulatory challenges vary by jurisdiction, with some countries imposing stricter regulations on DEX platforms than others.

Despite these challenges, the future looks promising for DEX platforms. Innovations in DEX technology, such as layer 2 solutions and cross-chain interoperability, hold the potential to enhance security, privacy, and scalability. Additionally, regulatory clarity and acceptance could further bolster the growth of DEX platforms, making them a key player in the future of cryptocurrency trading.

Conclusion

In conclusion, trading on decentralized exchanges offers numerous advantages, particularly in terms of security and privacy. By decentralizing the exchange process, DEX platforms eliminate single points of failure, enhance privacy, reduce counterparty risk, and increase accessibility. While challenges remain, the continued evolution of DEX technology and regulatory landscape point towards a promising future for decentralized trading platforms.

5 greatest boxers of all time

0
Galway daily sport Oughterard Boxing Club granted permission for new gym

Who doesn’t love a good boxing match? Whether it’s lightweight, heavyweight, featherweight, or even women boxers in any weight class, it’s always fun to sit back and watch two competitors go at each other in the ring. But who’s the best at doing that? Let’s find out.

These are the 5 greatest boxers of all time.

  1. Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather is regarded by many as one of the greatest defensive boxers ever. He is the most accurate puncher ever, recorded to have the greatest plus-minus ratio in the history of professional boxing.

He was undefeated throughout his professional career, winning 50 of his 50 fights.

  1. Rocky Marciano

Rocky is one of the greatest heavyweight fighters the sport has ever seen. He is literally the only heavyweight boxer to go his entire professional boxing career without losing a single match.

Of his 49 victories, 43 of them were won by knockout which means that he had an 87.76% knockout percentage, the highest of any heavyweight boxer in history.

  1. Joe Louis

Louis was not just a great boxer, he was a very influential figure. Many regard him as the first African-American to reach hero status in the US. That should tell you how good he was in the ring.

The Brown Bomber, as he was fondly called, had 69 fights in his professional career and won 66 of them. He was successful in 25 successive title defenses, a standing record across all weight classes.

  1. Muhammad Ali

Ali is one of the most influential sports figures of the 20th century. Some call him the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time, but many more just simply call him The Greatest.

He won 56 of his 61 professional career fights.

Muhammad Ali had so many iconic moments in and out of the ring. He famously dodged 21 punches in 10 seconds in a fight against Michael Dokes, he produced one of the greatest boxing photos of all time when he stood over a fallen Sonny Liston at just 22 years of age, but most iconic of all has to be him refusing to be drafted into the US military in 1966.

And oh, he is easily the greatest trash-talker in the history of sports.

  1. Sugar Ray Robinson

Now, this is the greatest boxer the sport has ever seen. Fans, sportswriters, trainers, and even fellow boxers seem to agree that Sugar Ray Robinson is the greatest boxer ever. And when we say fellow boxers, that includes the likes of Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali.

The term “pound for pound” was coined because of him, so that boxers across different weight classes could be compared. You see, Robinson was not a heavyweight fighter, but pound for pound, he was the greatest boxer that ever stepped foot in a ring.

He was so great that he inspired several other fighters to pick up the nickname “Sugar”: Sugar Ray Leonard and Sugar Shane Mosely, for example. Now, that’s a level of influence you just cannot touch.

Day Trading: What You Need to Know Before You Start

0

Embark on a journey into the captivating realm of day trading, where fortunes are made and lost in the blink of an eye. This article delves into the essential aspects every aspiring day trader must grasp before diving into the tumultuous waters of the financial markets. From understanding the basics to mastering risk management and psychological preparedness, this guide offers invaluable insights to set you on the path to success. Learn the essentials of day trading through Immediate Flik, where educational experts prepare you for the fast-paced world of stock trading.

Essential Tools and Resources:

Day trading is a dynamic endeavor that requires the right tools and resources to navigate the fast-paced world of the financial markets. At the heart of successful day trading lies technology, serving as the cornerstone upon which traders make split-second decisions.

One of the most crucial tools for any day trader is a robust trading platform. These platforms offer real-time market data, advanced charting capabilities, and order execution functionalities, empowering traders to act swiftly on market opportunities.

In addition to trading platforms, day traders rely heavily on analytical tools and resources to make informed decisions. Access to market information such as price quotes, volume data, and news feeds is essential for identifying potential trading opportunities and assessing market sentiment. Moreover, analytical tools such as technical indicators and charting software help traders analyze market trends, identify patterns, and formulate trading strategies.

While technology plays a significant role in day trading, traders must also develop a comprehensive toolkit comprising various resources to support their trading activities. This toolkit may include financial news websites, research reports, economic calendars, and online forums where traders exchange ideas and insights. By leveraging these resources, day traders can stay informed about market developments, gain valuable insights from other traders, and refine their trading strategies over time.

Furthermore, education is a vital resource for aspiring day traders. There are numerous educational resources available, including online courses, webinars, and books, that cover topics such as technical analysis, risk management, and trading psychology. By investing in their education, traders can acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the financial markets and improve their trading performance.

Essential tools and resources are indispensable for day traders looking to succeed in the highly competitive world of day trading. From advanced trading platforms to analytical tools and educational resources, building a comprehensive toolkit is essential for staying ahead of the curve and maximizing trading opportunities.

Risk Management Strategies

Risk management is a cornerstone of successful day trading, as the fast-paced nature of the markets exposes traders to significant risks. Without effective risk management strategies in place, traders may find themselves susceptible to substantial losses that could jeopardize their trading capital.

Therefore, implementing robust risk management practices is imperative for safeguarding against adverse market conditions and preserving long-term profitability.

One fundamental risk management strategy employed by day traders is the use of stop-loss orders. These orders automatically exit a trade when the price reaches a predetermined level, limiting potential losses and protecting capital. By setting stop-loss orders, traders can mitigate the impact of adverse price movements and prevent emotional decision-making in the heat of the moment.

Another key aspect of risk management is position sizing and leverage management. Determining the appropriate position size for each trade based on risk tolerance and account size is crucial for managing risk effectively.

Additionally, controlling leverage—the use of borrowed funds to amplify trading positions—is essential for minimizing the risk of margin calls and excessive losses. By maintaining conservative levels of leverage, traders can reduce the likelihood of catastrophic losses and ensure long-term sustainability.

Furthermore, diversification is a vital risk management strategy that involves spreading trading capital across multiple assets or markets. By diversifying their portfolios, traders can reduce the impact of individual market movements on their overall performance and minimize the risk of catastrophic losses.

Diversification can be achieved through trading different asset classes, such as stocks, options, and futures, as well as employing various trading strategies to capitalize on different market conditions.

Conclusion

In the electrifying world of day trading, preparation is paramount. Armed with the knowledge gained from this exploration, you’re equipped to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Remember, success in day trading demands discipline, patience, and continuous learning. As you embark on your day trading journey, may these insights serve as your guiding light amidst the ever-shifting tides of the market.

Summer of art at Ard Bia

0

This June, Ard Bia will host Aoibheann MacNamara’s second photographic exhibition titled Dungeness- which is a coastal desert region in the south of England.

This exhibition has a fixation on features in the natural landscape that gives context of time and location.

As an artist of photography, she works in automatic and lets the light largely dictate the work. This is by design and by its nature largely more bleached out like the barren landscape depicted throughout the pieces.

Long since mentioned in murmurs of elusiveness, Dungeness has often been the preserve of artists and writers – most notably the great Derek Jarmon.

His tar-washed yellow windowed hut of iconic standing is the big draw but from there, a bigger aesthetic story evolves.

Nuclear power stations, fish huts, lighthouses, colourful fishing debris, signal stations and much more presents a set design for escapist theatre in the shape of time spent there and of time removed.

This body of work, created over several early morning windswept walks while staying at the fog signal house in March 2024, pays homage to the beauty of a place that is like a moonscape with the most evocative structures within that scape.

“The muted colours of the images are untouched and left in their bleached-out state in a nod to analogue film we could not change once shot,” explained Aoibheann.

For more information call into Ard Bia on the Spanish Arch. The summer exhibition series will continue in July with painter Jose M. Yagüe Manzanares who through his painting of photography displays a love letter through his craft to Ireland.

Understanding GAA and Its Betting Landscape

The Basics of Gaelic Games

GAA, or the Gaelic Athletic Association, is the governing body for Gaelic games in Ireland. The two main sports under its umbrella are Gaelic football and hurling, played by amateur athletes. Gaelic football is similar to soccer and rugby while hurling is a stick-and-ball game that resembles field hockey.

The GAA was founded in 1884 and has become an integral part of Irish culture. The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship and the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship are the most prestigious competitions in Gaelic games. The winners of these competitions are awarded the Sam Maguire Cup and the Liam MacCarthy Cup, respectively.

Key Entities in GAA Betting

Sports betting on Gaelic games has become increasingly popular in recent years, with many bookmakers offering a wide range of betting markets. When it comes to GAA betting, there are several key entities to keep in mind:

  • Betting Markets: The most common betting markets for GAA matches include the match winner, the handicap market, and the over/under market. Some bookmakers also offer more niche markets, such as first goalscorer and total points scored.

  • Galway: Galway is one of the most successful counties in Gaelic games, having won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship twice and the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship five times. When betting on Galway matches, it’s important to consider their current form and historical performance.

  • Dublin: Dublin is the dominant force in Gaelic football, having won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship six times from 2015 to 2020. When betting on Dublin matches, it’s important to consider their current form and recent competition record.

  • Kerry: Kerry is another successful county in Gaelic football, having won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship 37 times. When betting on Kerry matches, it’s important to consider their current form and historical performance in the competition.

  • Sam Maguire Cup: The Sam Maguire Cup is the trophy awarded to the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship winners. When betting on this competition, it’s important to consider the team’s form and previous record.

  • Hurling: Hurling is a popular sport in Ireland and has a dedicated following among sports bettors. When betting on hurling matches, it’s important to consider the form of the teams and their previous record in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship.

By keeping these entities in mind, bettors can make more informed decisions when betting on Gaelic games. With a better understanding of the basics of the sport and the key entities in GAA betting, novice bettors can improve their chances of success.

Strategies for Betting on Galway’s GAA Matches

Analysing Teams and Players

To increase your chances of success when betting on Galway’s GAA matches, it is essential to have a good understanding of the teams and players. Researching recent form, head-to-head statistics, injuries, and impact players can provide valuable insights into a match’s likely outcome. Useful resources include team news and statistics on official GAA websites, local and national media coverage, and social media.

Understanding Odds and Markets

Understanding the different types of betting markets and odds is crucial when betting on Galway’s GAA matches. Most bookmakers offer fractional and decimal odds. Fractional odds are displayed as fractions, while decimal odds are shown as decimals. The Match Winner market is GAA’s most popular betting market, where you predict which team will win the match. Handicap betting is another popular market, where the bookmaker assigns a handicap to one team to level the playing field.

Leveraging In-Play Betting

In-play betting can be useful when betting on Galway’s GAA matches. It allows you to place wagers during the match and take advantage of changing odds and conditions. Some popular in-play betting markets include the next team to score, the number of points, and player performance. However, it is essential to exercise caution when using in-play betting, as the odds can change quickly, and it can be easy to get caught up in the excitement of the match.

Strategies and Value Bets

To succeed in betting on Galway’s GAA matches, it is essential to develop and stick to a strategy. One popular strategy is to focus on value bets, where you look for higher odds than they should be. This requires a good understanding of the teams and players and the betting markets and odds. Another strategy is to bet on the total points scored in a match, which can be easier to predict than the match winner.

Betting on Galway’s GAA matches requires knowledge, skill, and strategy. By analysing teams and players, understanding odds and markets, leveraging in-play betting, and developing a strategy, you can increase your chances of success and enjoy the excitement of GAA betting.

Choosing the Right Bookmakers and Offers

Choosing the right sportsbook is crucial when betting on Galway’s GAA matches. Here are some tips to help you find the right bookmaker and maximise your free bets and promotions.

Comparing GAA Sportsbooks

Before placing your bets, comparing GAA sportsbooks to find the one that suits your needs is important. Some of the most popular sportsbooks for GAA betting include Boylesports, Paddy Power, and Bet365. Each bookmaker offers different odds and promotions, so it’s important to research and compare them to find the best one for you.

You can compare sportsbooks by looking at their odds, promotions, and customer service. It’s also important to check if they offer responsible gambling tools, such as deposit limits and self-exclusion.

Maximising Free Bets and Promotions

Most sportsbooks offer free bets and promotions to attract new customers and retain existing ones. These can be a great way to boost your bankroll and increase your chances of winning. However, reading the terms and conditions carefully before claiming any offers is important.

Some common types of promotions include matched deposits, free bets, and enhanced odds. Matched deposits are when the sportsbook matches your first deposit up to a certain amount. Free bets are when you are given a free bet to use on a specific market. Enhanced odds are when the sportsbook boosts the odds on a particular event.

To maximise your free bets and promotions, it’s important to read the terms and conditions carefully and follow any instructions. Some promotions may have minimum odds or wagering requirements, so understand these before placing your bets.

Choosing the right sportsbook and taking advantage of free bets and promotions can help you increase your chances of winning when betting on Galway’s GAA matches. However, it’s important to gamble responsibly and only bet what you can afford to lose.

Responsible Gambling in Sports Betting

Setting Deposit Limits

One of the best ways to practice responsible gambling is by setting deposit limits. This helps you to stay in control of your bankroll and avoid overspending. Most reputable online sports betting platforms offer deposit limit options to their users. You can set daily, weekly or monthly deposit limits per your budget and preferences. It is important to note that once you reach your deposit limit, you should not try to exceed it by depositing more funds.

Knowing When to Cash Out

Another important aspect of responsible gambling is knowing when to cash out. This feature allows you to take your winnings before the end of the match. Cashing out is particularly useful when you think the odds might change against your selection. It is also helpful when you want to secure your profits before the end of the game.

However, it is important to note that cashing out should not be used to chase losses. It is also important to consider the potential loss of value when cashing out early. You should always make an informed decision when using the cash-out feature.

Bankroll Management

Bankroll management is a crucial aspect of responsible gambling. It involves setting a budget for your sports betting activities and sticking to it. This helps you to avoid overspending and minimise the risk of losing more than you can afford. You should always bet with money you can afford to lose and avoid using money meant for other important expenses.

Safer Gambling

Sports betting should be a fun activity. However, it is important to practice safer gambling to avoid developing a gambling addiction. You should always gamble responsibly and seek help if you feel you are losing control. Most reputable sports betting platforms offer tools and resources to help users practice safer gambling. These include self-exclusion options, time-out features and links to gambling support services.

TV Coverage and Team News

When betting on Galway’s GAA matches, it is important to consider factors such as TV coverage and team news. TV coverage can affect the odds of a match, especially if it is a high-profile game. Team news, on the other hand, can help you to make an informed selection. You should always check for any suspensions or injuries before placing your bet.

Odds Formats and Selection

Most online sports betting platforms offer different odds formats, such as fractional, decimal and American. It is important to choose an odds format that you are comfortable with. When selecting your bet, you should consider factors such as the team’s form, head-to-head statistics and the current odds. You should always make an informed decision when selecting your bet and avoid making impulsive decisions based on emotions.

Galway University Hospitals and the Saolta welcome progress on major capital projects

0
Galway Daily news

Galway University Hospitals (GUH) and the Saolta University Health Care Group are pleased to announce further progress in the delivery of the major capital projects planned for GUH.

To manage delivery and timelines for the required infrastructure a formal project board has been established.

The board is now finalising a master plan for the Galway city campus which will enhance the delivery of essential health care services for our population.

The masterplan for GUH encompasses the key priorities for the site; a new ED and Women’s and Children’s block, a new Laboratory, Cancer Centre and bed block on the UHG campus.

It will also oversee plans for the Merlin Park campus including the elective hospital for the region and surgical hub.

A design team, which incorporates architects, engineers, quantity surveyors and energy efficiency experts, has also been appointed and will ensure future capacity needs are central to the phased masterplan, taking account of co-dependencies and reflecting clinical priorities.

A programme manager has also been appointed to oversee the implementation of the hospital masterplan, which will be completed in Q3, 2024.

They will work closely with both internal and external stakeholders to progress the developments.

Chris Kane, hospital manager of GUH said, “The delivery of these major projects will allow us to provide vital services and earlier access to care for our growing population.”

“Separating acute and non-acute services will greatly improve efficiency and ultimately better serve our patients.”

HSE Performance Activity Data shows that GUH remains one of the busiest hospitals in the country with high levels of ED presentations, Day case activity and Outpatient activity. However, the existing facilities are not sufficient to provide long-term sustainability to GUH.

The announcement this week by the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly of 228 new beds for the hospital will play a significant role in the overall infrastructure plans.

The new beds will be provided in separate phases with GUH set to benefit from 198 beds between 2024 and 2028 with a further 30 coming on stream between 2029 and 2031.

“The UHG campus is complex with significant and growing activity taking place every day. Our infrastructure needs are no small task but they are vital,” said Tony Canavan, Regional Executive Officer HSE West and North West.

“The masterplan will ensure that each project integrates fully and allow maximum service opportunities for patients. It is an investment that will yield a return for the people of the West and North West for the next 50 years,” he added.

The new plan will see all elective, day surgery and ambulatory care move to the MPUH campus while complex acute, oncology and maternity care remains in UHG.

In order to deliver the ambitious plans, work is progressing in decanting some services to the Merlin Park site. Phase One of the Outpatient Department block in MPUH is at an advanced stage and this will be followed by a Phase Two development relocating the majority of outpatient appointments to Merlin Park.

Plans for an elective hospital and surgical hub are also progressing for the MPUH campus with a contractor appointed to progress the surgical hub.

Ann Cosgrove, Interim CEO of the Saolta University Health Care Group also welcomed the Minister’s commitment as a vital first step in the wider plans for the site.

“The commitment to these new beds is hugely welcome and will form a vital part of the overall infrastructure plans for GUH.”

“We look forward to progressing the plans as quickly as possible and in the meantime continue to do everything we can within the existing infrastructure to provide safe and timely care,” she added.
