Fidil Ghorm
Irish film Fidil Ghorm (Blue Fiddle) will have its International Premiere at the acclaimed Newport Beach Film Festival in California on October 20, a year on from filming in beautiful Rathmullan, Co. Donegal.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Newport Beach Film Festival is one of the largest luxury lifestyle film festivals in the United States.
The event brings an internationally curated collection of films and vibrant cultural gatherings to the beautiful Southern California coast at a festival committed to championing the work of original storytellers from around the globe, celebrating cinematic excellence .
Fidil Ghorm is about 10-year-old Molly who meets a grumpy old fiddle player whom she hears has  ‘magic in his hands’ and she believes that if she can convince  him to teach her to play the fiddle as beautifully as her father did that she can wake him from a coma.
Having won Best First Feature at the Gaway Film Fleadh in July it was quickly snapped up by Newport Beach.
“This well crafted and heartwarming film is sure to be a favourite with our audience. It’s ability to connect on multiple levels transcend language and make for a thoroughly enjoyable cinematic experience. We are truly proud to have it as our International Spotlight,” says Cindy Cisneros, Co-Director of Feature Film Programming, Newport Beach Film Festival.
Bríd Seoighe, Producer, Abú Media says: “When we were offered to have Fidil Ghorm’s International premier at Newport Beach Film Festival there was no doubt in our minds that Newport Beach was the right home for the film. I’ve had a long distance love affair with Newport Beach, more so because off all the musicians associated with the place but going here to screen Fidil Ghorm is truly a dream come true. With a longstanding history of the greatest music artists at the Newport Beach Folk Festival , we felt this was a spiritual home coming for Fidil Ghorm.”
Pierce Boyce, Producer, Abú Media says: “We are delighted and honoured to have our latest CINE 4 feature film ‘Fidil Ghorm’ have its International premiere at Newport Beach Film Festival in California this October.”
Main Cast includes; Barry Mc Govern, (Waiting for Godot, Braveheart, Far & Away) Edith Lawlor, Ruadhán Ó Flatharta, Siobhán O’Kelly, (Borderline, Blackshore, The Tourist, Dominion Creek), Aindrais de Staic & Marcus Lamb.
The film’s director Anne McCabe says: “It’s a story about hope, and the magic happens for me watching actors through the lens, when the script ignites and comes alive. What a privilege to work with renowned Beckett actor, Barry McGovern, and with the raw talent of a total newcomer, Edith Lawlor. Together they shine and become real. I am very proud to have been a part of creating that magic on set.”

Filmed on location in Rathmullan, Donegal, the film really showcases the northern most tip of Ireland’s acclaimed Wild Atlantic Way. The fact that Rathmullan is also the birthplace of Producer Pierce Boyce is no coincidence.
“I was always very keen to shoot something big up there but never had the script until Fidil Ghorm came along and it fitted everything in the story so well, it was a no brainer really”, says Pierce Boyce .

The film is scored by composer Odhrán Ó Casaide who has seamlessly integrated the traditional and classical idioms to create a powerful film score that brings us through a wide range of emotions from despair to hope.”
“This film is a composers dream because it contains so many great elements of emotion, from happiness to tragedy and from overcoming adversity to salvation. It is essentially a story about musical discovery with music as a central element. I have thoroughly enjoyed writing this score,” says Odhrán Ó Casaide.
Fidil Ghorm with a beautiful film score marries with the stunning landscape of Rathmullan and Lough Swilly, a score that is an odyssey in that it is a musical  representation of an epic emotional journey.
From the haunting opening sequence sung by Sibéal Ni Casaide, (daughter of the composer) through to the rousing orchestral dramatic escape across the lough, from the sadness and pathos of loss to  triumph, these mood changes are reflected in this stunning musical score.
The charming screenplay is written by author Patricia Fordewho is Ireland’s children’s literature laureate for Children ‘Laureate na nÓg’ and is her first screen play.
Fidil Ghorm was developed with funding from Abú Media’s partners in TG4, Screen Ireland, Coimisiún na Mean and Section 481 tax incentive under the CINE4 scheme.

Concerns about ‘postcode lottery’ in neurological care

0
Photographed at the launch of the Neurological Alliance of Ireland’s ‘Meet the Members’ event were, Magdalen Rogers, Executive Director, Neurological Alliance of Ireland; Denis Naughten TD; Eamon McPartlin, patient representative; and Alison Cotter, Vice Chair, Neurological Alliance of Ireland.

The Neurological Alliance of Ireland (NAI), the national umbrella body for over 30 neurological organisations, met with Roscommon-Galway Oireachtas members at a pre-Budget event held last week at Buswells Hotel in Dublin.

Members raised concerns about a ‘postcode lottery’ where access to critical services is dependent on where you live.

Representatives from Roscommon-Galway that attended the event included Denis Naughten TD.

Specifically, the NAI called attention to the lack of neurology services in regional hospitals; the two community neurorehabilitation teams promised in 2019 that are yet to be delivered; and further serious staffing shortages in two existing community neurorehabilitation teams. The organisation has two key asks for Budget 2025:

  1. The delivery of fully resourced community neurorehabilitation teams for the midlands/northeast and southeast regions, and to tackle the staffing shortages for existing teams in the midwest and northwest.
  2. The provision of access to a Consultant Neurologist in five regional hospitals in Bantry, Letterkenny, Wexford, Mayo and Portlaoise.

Speaking at the launch, Magdalen Rogers, Executive Director of the Neurological Alliance of Ireland said, “The theme of our pre-Budget submission this year is ‘Right Place’, meaning that access to care should not depend on where you live in Ireland.

“We’ve seen very welcome investment in recent years by this Government in neurology services and community neurorehabilitation teams but it is still falling short in meeting the needs of those living with a neurological condition in this country.

“It is critically important that people in Roscommon-Galway and other regions are not placed at a disadvantage when it comes to accessing these services.”

Eamon McPartlin, a patient representative living with Function Neurological Disorder (FND) and Dystonia from Manorhamilton, Leitrim said, “In the northwest we are at a huge disadvantage when it comes to accessing neurological services.

“The existing community neurorehabilitation team in HSE area CHO 1 is funded currently for less than a quarter of the staffing it should have and is only available to people living in Donegal. This means that the service is not available for most people living in the region. We were hoping to see funding for this team in 2024 and it didn’t happen, it’s now critical that funding is provided in the upcoming Budget so we don’t lag behind the rest of the country.

“Similarly, the neurology service in Sligo University Hospital is completely overstretched trying to provide outreach to Letterkenny University Hospital. A dedicated Neurologist in Letterkenny University Hospital would have a huge impact on the lives of those living with a neurological condition in the region.”

The Neurological Alliance is a coalition of neurological charities which advocates for developing and resourcing services across the spectrum of neurological diseases and neuro-disability. For more information visit: https://www.nai.ie/

Cristina Espejo, Tourism Ireland; Susana Martínez, Kannak; and Nicole Matus, Killary Fjord Boat Tours, on day two of the travel trade roadshow in Madrid.

Galway was promoted to around 200 tour operators and travel agents in four cities across Spain – at a travel trade roadshow visiting the cities of Seville, Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona.

The roadshow was organised by Tourism Ireland and VisitBritain, in conjunction with Visit Norway, Poland Tourism and Czech Tourism.

Three (3) tourism companies from Ireland – includingKillary Fjord Boat Tours – took part in the roadshow, which involved a workshop event in each city.

It was a great opportunity to meet and do business with the Spanish travel professionals, to encourage them to extend their Ireland offering, or to include Ireland for the first time, in their programmes for 2025 and beyond.

The cities of Seville, Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona were selected for the roadshow as they are key gateways, with direct flights to Ireland for Spanish holidaymakers.

The roadshow provided a valuable opportunity for Tourism Ireland and its partners to remind the Spanish travel professionals all about the many great things to see and do around Ireland, and all that is new and exciting.

Susan Bolger, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Spain, said: “We’re delighted that so many of our key Spanish travel trade contacts took the time to come and meet with our partners from Ireland, to learn all about our superb tourism offering.”

“Our aim is to increase awareness of Ireland among these influential Spanish tour operators and travel agents – and to help Ireland and our tourism partners secure a greater share of their business for 2025 and beyond.”

GALWAY daily news

The volunteer lifeboat crew were tasked on Monday at 5.30pm to carry out a medical evacuation from Inishbofin.

Under the command of Coxswain James Mullen, Clifden’s all weather lifeboat St Christopher was launched with Joe Acton, Kenny Flaherty, Shane Conneely and Chris Nee as crew.

At the island, the crew carried out casualty care on the patient who was injured from a fall. The crew received a handover from fellow RNLI volunteer Ash Sweeney who is providing relief community nursing on Inishbofin.

Once the patient was secure and comfortable he was transported back to Cleggan pier and into an awaiting ambulance for further treatment by National Ambulance Service paramedics.

The crew were also called out on Sunday afternoon to investigate a local sailing boat that had broken free from her moorings in Clifden Bay.

Clifden RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, Tony Casey said, “As the seasons and sea conditions are changing and we prepare for wet and windy weather this is a good time to remind all mariners to check their moorings and ensure their vessels are in good condition.

“Mechanical failure is the single biggest cause of rescue call outs to sailing and motor cruisers, accounting for nearly 20% of RNLI lifeboat launches.”

“Always wear an appropriate lifejacket. Always carry a means of calling and signalling for help. Ensure there is an emergency action plan in place and everybody has an onboard briefing (in particular on the location and use of the safety equipment, including the spare kill cord for powerboats), lastly please never delay in calling for assistance, in Clifden RNLI we are ready to respond 24/7.”

Oranmore rail commuters “cannot be left waiting” says Cllr

0

Cllr John Connolly has expressed “deep frustration” at how long it has taken to make a planning application for the second platform in Oranmore.

He added that the application cannot be used as an excuse not to deal with “urgent issues” which require “immediate attention” at the station.

“An announcement of a planning application by Minister Naughton, which should’ve been made years ago, for the second platform at Oranmore Train Station rings hollow for people who get on the 7:49am train from Athenry train and 8:01am train from Oranmore to Galway,” said Cllr Connolly.

“The conditions that passengers are currently experiencing on that train are deplorable. Breathing space is at a premium and there is no capacity for additional passengers to get on in Oranmore.”

“The announcement of funding for the second platform and passing loop at Oranmore railway station was first made in December 2020 and has been rehashed at every opportunity by Senior Fine Gael politicians.”

“It is mind-boggling to think that the preparation of a planning application has taken almost four years. I hope the decision to grant planning will happen quicker than the time it took to make the application. One could be forgiven for thinking the application was on hold pending the timing of the election.”

“I have also sought clarity from the NTA as to whether the planning application includes for the expansion of the Car Park at the station. In October 2022, the NTA informed Galway City Council that the Train Station at Oranmore was one of their strategic park-and-ride sites that could be delivered in the Short Term.”

“To facilitate this, the NTA advised that it was required to increase the parking capacity of the site from 140 cars to 280 cars.”

“I have also contacted Irish Rail to request that they maintain four carriages on the train between Limerick and Galway every morning. This train serves Athenry at 7:49am and Oranmore at 8:01am. Currently, the train is reduced from four carriages to two between Ennis and Galway. Two carriages are insufficient for the existing demand between Athenry and Galway.”

Garda Dara Melia, Garda Brendan Talty, Garda Shane Riddell, Superintendent Ollie Baker, Kathleen Kenny, Chief Superintendent Gerry Roche, Killian Kenny, Inspector Georgina Lohan and Garda Randal Considine.

Two members of An Garda Síochána in Co. Galway have been awarded Commendations with Distinction following their rescue of a man from the water in Kinvara on Thursday, 19 September 2024.

Presenting Garda Randal Considine and Garda Shane Riddell with the commendations in Gort Garda Station Chief Superintendent Gerry Roche said: “You are both awarded Commendations with Distinction for the rescue of a male from the waters at Dunguaire, Kinvara, in circumstances where the male had become trapped in rocks in rapidly rising tide. The male was brought to safety to shore.”

At the presentation, Killian Kenny, who was rescued, thanked the Gardaí for their fast response.

“Had it not been for you, I wouldn’t be here,” said Killian.

“The tide rose so fast, I could feel it coming up to my shoulders, then I could feel it coming to my chin. Randal, after going down to release my boot from the rocks, swam me back to shore. It was heroic. Had it been two minutes later, chances are it would be a different story.”

Receiving his commendation, Garda Considine said: We’re glad we got there in time, we got a bit of a shock when we looked over the wall and could only see your head. We’re happy to have got you out and safely back to your family.”

“Right place, right time,” added Garda Riddell.

Superintendent Ollie Baker of Galway County East Community Engagement said: “Our response in management was one of total admiration for what the two members did. They just acted on instinct and it is a real testament to them; everything they did was phenomenal.

“It gives me great comfort that we have members of that calibre working in our area and responding and understanding the need to have an immediate response. It was a real team effort and it must have been a frightening, shocking and exhilarating experience all at the same time,” he said.

Inspector Georgina Lohan of Galway County East Community Engagement said: “For An Garda Síochána, our mission is to keep people safe and I think, with distinction, that’s what the lads did on that day. They kept you safe.”

At around 4.45pm on Thursday, 19 September, 2024, Garda Randal Considine and Garda Shane Riddell were on duty when they got a call to a small rocky outcrop near Dunguaire Castle (Kinvara) where a man had gotten into difficulty in the water.

As many locals would do when the tide is out, the man had walked out to the rocky outcrop which is only a short distance from the shore.

Killian Kenny, aged in his 70s, was wading back to the mainland when his left foot and leg became trapped in rocks and the tide began to come in dangerously quickly.

When the two Gardaí arrived at the scene, only Mr Kenny’s head was visible above water.
In true team spirit, Garda Riddell ran for a life buoy while Garda Considine swam to the man and managed to free him from the rocks, and swim him back to shore, where emergency services were waiting. He made a full recovery.

Discovering the World of Live Casino Games

Ever since Nevada shocked the world in the 1930s, America’s love affair with gambling has been insatiable. With the rise of the modern-day casino scene in Reno and Tahoe in the 1950s, Americans and tourists from all over the world looked to test their luck to beat the house at their favorite games, especially table games. The momentum only picked up with the rise of Las Vegas and Atlantic City Boardwalk Casinos in the 60s and the 80s.

Fast-forward to today, thanks to massive leaps in technology, table games took a digital leap in the mid-90s with the first wave of online casinos. With a global audience now able to play their favorite table games, the next big step came in the late 2000s, when the first attempt for live dealer games. And ever since that time, the love affair for professional and rewarding live casino games hasn’t slowed down since. This guide takes you into the exciting and growing world of live casino games because, 24/7, you’re only a spin away from greatness.

1. Roulette

Step into any reputable online casino with a live dealer section, and you will find multiple roulette games as the centerpiece. Roulette goes back to 1600s France, and the love affair for spinning the “little wheel” has only grown with the rise of live dealer games. Roulette features inside and outside bets to spin the wheel. Because outside bets cover most of the wheel, many players, including beginners, gravitate towards betting on even and odd, or red or black, with these common roulette games:

Roulette Variants:

  • French Roulette: The French variant is the oldest roulette game. Featuring only one zero, the game layout is in French. However, French Roulette has a favorable house edge of 2.63% because of the single zero. Also, the French variant is the only one that features La Partage, and En Prison rules that lower the house edge to 1.35% because you have a chance to recover from losing straight bets if the ball lands on the single zero.
  • European Roulette: The European version plays identically to the French version, except the table layout is all in English. Also, only having one zero, European Roulette has a consistent house edge between 2.63% and 2.70% because it doesn’t have La Partage or En Prison rules.
  • American Roulette: The newest of the main roulette variants, American Roulette, is the only game with a double zero. As a result, the house edge shoots up to 5.26%. Still, American Roulette is unique for live dealer play because it is the only variant that supports the box bet because of the double zero.
  • Lightning Roulette: Lightning Roulette is based on European Roulette, and players can make all the usual roulette bets in real-time with a professional croupier. In addition to winning basic roulette payouts, random winning multipliers strike down onto the screen with lightning. The results are winning multipliers between 5x and 50x.
  • Auto Roulette: Depending on the live dealer site, Auto Roulette might play with the French or American version. Make all the traditional roulette bets, but instead of having a croupier spin the wheel, the game’s CPU does it for you.
  • First Person Roulette: Also, depending on the live casino, First Person Roulette plays with either the European or American variant, but the wheel is spun in beautiful 4K to your web browser or mobile device for your perspective as if you were sitting at the table.

2. Poker

Thanks to the expansion of live dealer games and their popularity, it’s now common to see more online poker real money and sweepstakes games available for live dealer play. While not as extensive as other card games, these poker games continue to surge in popularity in the live dealer arena:

Examples:

  • Texas Hold’em: There’s no question that having Texas Hold’em featured in popular Hollywood films like Casino Royale has it available for live dealer play at online and even sweepstakes casinos. Prepare to practice your bluff because you’re going to have to bluff the live competition to win.
  • Three-Card Poker: Live Three-Card Poker plays at a fast pace because all the players and the dealer receive three cards. Of course, before the main bets begin, all the players make an ante bet to contribute to the overall jackpot. Fold or keep going, it’s your call playing live Three-Card Poker.
  • Video Poker: A new addition to the live dealer scene, today it is more common to find classic video poker games like Jacks or Better. A live dealer takes your bet, and the video poker game selects five cards for you to keep or discard for a stronger winning hand.

3. Blackjack

Without a doubt, online blackjack continues to surge in popularity for the live dealer section because it is one of the few card games that give you a 50% chance of calling 21 or having a better hand than the dealer. Thanks to incredible technological leaps, online blackjack has never been more exciting than with these variants.

Examples:

  • American Blackjack: American Blackjack, also known as “Classic Blackjack” or simply “Blackjack,” is a staple of live dealer play thanks to a robust 99% RTP. Most of the main blackjack bets, including splitting aces, are available.
  • European Blackjack: European Blackjack plays a lot like American Roulette, with the subtle difference of the dealer having to wait to deal themselves the second card, face down card after all the players have made their bets.
  • Gravity Blackjack: Gravity Blackjack combines the best of classic blackjack bets but with the enhancement of winning multipliers like from slot games. So after getting to 21, not only can you receive a 3:2 payout, but random winning multipliers on top of that, too.

4. Baccarat

There’s no question that live baccarat continues to flourish due to its elegant display in Hollywood films like the James Bond series, specifically Golden Eye and Dr. No. In recent years, the top-tier game developers like Evolution Gaming, Playtech, Iconic 21 and Beter Live for social casinos.

Examples:

  • Live Baccarat: The most basic form of live baccarat is the Punto Banco variant. Players go against the banker, and they can bet on the player’s, the banker’s, or even the tie.
  • Squeeze Baccarat: Squeeze Baccarat is new to the live dealer area. Playing like the standard live Punto Banco version, the dealer slowly “squeezes” out the cards to the players at the table to heighten the drama.
  • Super 6: Super 6 is based on the popular side bet by the same name. However, this live variant doesn’t have a commission for playing this live dealer game.

Conclusion

After reading this live casino guide, you can see that the time is now to jump into the amazing live dealer scene. As we speak, major game developers like Playtech are doubling their efforts to improve their live casino games. In recent years, live game shows have become extremely popular. Even social casinos are beginning to adopt live casino games to complement their growing live dealer options.

Galway schools save 130,400 used batteries from landfill in school recycling competition

0
TV and radio presenter Laura Woods is calling on students across Ireland to become battery recycling champions as WEEE Ireland’s Schools Battery Recycling Competition enters its 13th year. She was joined by Millie O'Rourke and Evaine Healy of Roundwood National School in Wicklow who collected the equivalent of 95,000 AA batteries to win in their category.

Schools across Galway saved thousands of used batteries from entering the landfill during the last school year.

50 schools in Galway participated in WEEE Ireland’s Schools Battery Recycling Competition, collecting the equivalent of 130,400 used AA batteries for recycling.

Nationally, the equivalent of 1.5 million used AA batteries—the weight of almost four school buses—were collected and recycled by primary and secondary students during the last school year thanks to their overwhelming participation across Ireland.

The competition returns this October for a new school year, and is open to all primary and secondary schools in WEEE Ireland battery recycling counties that collect at least 10 full 5kg battery boxes.

TV and radio presenter Laura Woods launched this year’s campaign, which also support LauraLynn Children’s Hospice, calling on schools and students across Ireland to register for the competition as it enters its 13th year.

“The recycling efforts from every participating school not only make a significant environmental impact but also provide essential support to LauraLynn’s children’s hospice,” said Laura.

“Schools that engage in this important drive help rescue millions of batteries that might otherwise sit forgotten in drawers or old devices, ensuring their valuable materials can be recovered for reuse.”

Last year’s competition marked a new milestone, with a record number of primary and secondary schools participating  from October 2023 to March of this year.

By actively encouraging the involvement of teachers, families, and the broader community to collect used batteries for recycling, students can ensure that valuable materials like lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper are recovered and reused, rather than lost to landfills.

“The new European Battery Regulations, applicable from earlier this year, introduce comprehensive rules to manage the entire lifecycle of batteries within the EU,” said Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland.

“Minimum material recovery targets for materials like cobalt, lithium, and nickel will apply to various battery types, ensuring valuable materials are recaptured.”

“These new targets will require increased participation in battery recycling across all sectors, so we’d urge even more to join the drive this year and make a real difference to saving materials that are increasingly in scarce supply.”

Kerry McLaverty, CEO of LauraLynn, expressed her gratitude as each battery recycled through WEEE Ireland contributes to a donation fund for LauraLynn.

“The funds we have received from WEEE Ireland as a result of the battery campaign have had such a positive impact on the children and families who avail of LauraLynn’s care and specialised supports all across Ireland,” she said.

“This year’s donation brings the total fundraising to €590,575 – an incredible level. WEEE Ireland has been partnering with and supporting us since day one and we are grateful for their continued support as we grow our community of care and support more children and families than ever before.”

“We’d also like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to recycle their batteries. It may seem like something small, but for the children and families who rely on LauraLynn, and for the environment, it is huge and very impactful.”

Schools interested in participating in the WEEE Ireland Schools Batteries competition can visit weeeireland.ie for more information on the competition and to order WEEE Ireland Blue Battery boxes.
