A contractor is expected to be chosen shortly for the first stage of work in the development of a new Emergency Department for Portiuncula Hospital.

Plans for a new 50 bed Accident and Emergency Ward for Portiuncula Hospital have been in the works for a long time.

Galway TD Denis Naughten said that the tender process for enabling works in advance of the construction of the new A&E is nearly complete.

“The HSE is now going through some legal requirements and they expect a contractor will be appointed shortly after that, with works on site before the end of the Summer”.

A contractor was expected to be made earlier after the HSE gave approval for the project last October, he said, with “unacceptable delays” holding up the decision.

“The result of Covid 19 is that as a new ward block is now more urgently required than ever before to address the chaotic situation that many patients, and staff, have faced in the past in our local A&E Department.”

“The commitment by Government to the Portiuncula development is clearly set out in Project Ireland 2040 and I have made it clear that I expect that to be fulfilled.”
