There is huge anticipation building as cellist Sheku and his sister, pianist Isata are coming west for A Taste of Cellissimo with Music for Galway this month.
Sheku shot to fame in 2018 after performing at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at Windsor Castle, his performance having been greeted with universal excitement after being watched by nearly two billion people globally.
Many saw him this September as he enthralled audiences on closing night at the BBC Proms.
“It is a great to coup for us”, said Music for Galway’s artistic director Finghin Collins. “How exciting to bring Sheku and his sister, the equally fantastic and exciting pianist, to Galway.”
“What a great way of giving people a little taste of what is to come during our Cellissimo 2024 cello festival in May. It will be a 9 day dynamic, inclusive, accessible celebration of superb music. Cellissimo will appeal to classical aficionados and first timers alike.”
A Taste of Cellissimo with Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason will take place on November 18 at The Galmont Hotel & Spa in Galway City.
Passion sums up the music programmed for this November night, which showcases beautifully what a great combination the cello and piano can be.
The evening opens with the late romantic and passionate sonata by Frank Bridge. It continues with Chopin’s searching and melancholy work, one of the very few he wrote for this combination.
Rachmaninov’s powerful piece with its suspenseful, restless and driving middle movement is sure to bring the evening to a climactic end.
Tickets to A Taste of Cellissimo are €45 for Zone A, €30 for Zone B, and €15 for Social Inclusion tickets.
Social inclusion tickets are available to children, students (full time), people in receipt of disability, carers and back-to-work allowance as well as to people seeking refuge and refugees.
