The Government has announced €30 million in funding over 3-years to support the post office network across the country, a move which has been warmly welcomed by the Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU).

The IPU says the package announced today will help to keep post offices open and government services accessible in local communities.

The Union said that the funding shows that the Government, like many others across Europe, is recognising the social value of post offices.

President of the Irish Postmasters’ Union Seán Martin said that the post office network is the lifeblood of our towns and villages and a much-trusted focal point of our communities.

“The Network continues to be Ireland’s largest retail and face-to-face service network at the heart of over 900 communities serving approximately 1.3 million customers each week,” he said.

“Our role in supporting communities was never more evident than during the recent pandemic when we were one of the few government services to remain open throughout.”

Seán Martin thanked the Government for making this funding available to protect and strengthen the network for the public’s benefit.

Galway Senator Aisling Dolan also welcomed the announcement, saying that this is strong support for the post office network and staff across Galway.

“It’s a boost for communities and postmasters working in our towns and villages that provide essential banking & post services. This government investment shows the commitment to ‘Our Rural Future’ strategy,” she said.
