A pedestrian in his 80s has died after being hit by a car near Claregalway late on Friday night.
GardaĆ and emergency services were called to the scene of a collision on the N83 in Loughgeorge last night.
The collision occurred when a car struck a pedestrian shortly after 11:30pm at Peake, on the Tuam Road in Loughgeorge.
The pedestrian, a man in his 80s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Coroner was notified, and the deceased has since been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway where a post-mortem examination will be arranged.
The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was brought to hospital for assessment; his injuries are not described as life-threatening.
The road remains closed at the scene, which is preserved pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Traffic diversions are in place.
