Met Eireann is forecasting grim weather for Galway today, with “phenomenal waves” at high water times and the possibility of coastal flooding.

A Status Yellow weather warning for all of Connacht, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Donegal has been updated by Met Eireann.

It warns that very strong southwesterly winds and some severe gusts are expected on Sunday morning.

Heading into the afternoon and on to Monday, these will veer west to northwest, but remain dangerous.

“Strong winds, surge and phenomenal waves may lead to wave overtopping particularly at times of high water, and coastal flooding is possible along coasts.”

This weather warning came into force at 5am this morning, and will remain in place until 9am on Monday morning.

A Status Orange Storm Warning has also been issued for the west and northwest coasts of Ireland from Sunday evening.

“Northwesterly winds will reach storm force 10 on Sunday evening and Sunday night on Irish coastal waters from Valentia to Rossan Point to Belfast Lough.”

This marine warning will be in effect from 6pm Sunday until 6am on Monday morning.

Separate weather warnings for wind and rain have also been issued for the rest of the country today and tomorrow morning.
