Viable explosive made safe by Army in Tuam

A viable explosive device in Tuam was made safe by the Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal team this afternoon, and Gardai are now appealing for witnesses.

The army EOD team from Athlone was called to Tuam by Gardai this morning after the discovery of an unexplained device.

An area of an estate around the Weir Road was also evacuated and sealed off from 8.30am this morning.

A Garda spokesperson said that the device has since been deemed to have been a viable explosive.

It has been removed by the EOD squad, who have now left the area.

An Garda Síochána is appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity of Millstream Park or Weir Road in Tuam on Tuesday night and up to 8:30am this morning to come forward.

Anyone who may have information is asked to contact Tuam Garda Station at 093 70840.

Anyone who has video footage, including dash cam footage in these areas, which may be of assistance is asked to also contact Tuam Garda Station.
